Many technologies have been suggested for use in fighting drug counterfeiting and diversion. Item serialization, RFID, bar coding, color-shifting ink, holograms, covert and forensic markers, and others can be employed to track or authenticate your products. Layering is advised so you aren’t relying solely on one system. Tamper evidence may also be important to show that a particular approach has not been breached.

FDA is currently working on standards, so guidance may be coming to help you implement your security programs. Experts bristle at technology mandates, however. To stay prepared, packagers should study available techniques and work with packaging vendors on any needed material or format changes.
