CALYPSO from Carl Zeiss: Just Measure
CAD-based CALYPSO software from ZEISS is ideally suited for all measuring systems

Oberkochen, Germany – October 23, 2007 CAD-based CALYPSO® measuring software is the ideal software for almost any measuring task. The software from Carl Zeiss Industrielle Messtechnik GmbH permits manual and CNC measurements, online and offline programming. All measuring tasks can be completed at the click of a mouse. CALYPSO is completely multi-sensor capable and supports all current ZEISS sensors – whether for single-point, scanning or optical measuring. This creates the ideal measuring system for every measuring task on one measuring machine. The CAD core and numerous interfaces also enable the exchange of different data formats between measuring and CAD systems, effective statistics and the use of non-ZEISS measuring systems.
Systematic software strategy tailored to the application
The standard software for ZEISS coordinate measuring machines is CAD-based CALYPSO measuring and evaluation software. It is ideal for all tasks and measuring strategies, whether in a measuring lab or directly in production. CALYPSO simplifies the generation of measurement plans, offers software and sensor flexibility and measurement logs suitable to the application. CALYPSO features interfaces for all standard CAD formats. Via a DME interface, CALYPSO can also be used on non-ZEISS measuring machines. In addition to traditional 3D measuring machines, this also includes articulated arm measuring machines, laser trackers and computer tomographs.
Combined with other software packages, CALYPSO also provides added flexibility during measurement. Gear® Pro is used to evaluate gear wheels, Blade® Pro to measure turbine blades and HOLOS® NT to measure freeform surfaces. CALYPSO records the measured values which are then evaluated in the special software.
CALYPSO supports the I++/DME interface for interoperability for the combination of hardware and software regardless of manufacturer. This enables the use of ZEISS software on practically all standard competitor products.
Intuitively create measuring programs
Measuring runs can be very easily created with CALYPSO. This software offers all design features for the intuitive generation of measuring programs. With object-oriented programming – visual metrology – the operator uses the features of the design drawing. It is possible to make corrections and changes to existing measuring programs as well as generate partial measuring runs from an entire CNC program. In accordance with the specifications, tolerances are selected from the drawing or the CAD model. The key factor for users is that measuring programs can be created offline. The integrated assistant provides support during the selection of the references and generates the finished measurement plan. CALYPSO Planner provides the required data interfaces and makes the measuring process visible in the simulation. Standardized interfaces ensure the exchange of data within the process chain, including collision observation of the measuring plans created offline.
The workpiece does not need to exist at the time of programming. Users can handle large CAD models very easily. Kinematic models of coordinate measuring machines have been integrated into CALYPSO to simulate the measuring run. The entire configuration of your hardware can be visualized. What the user sees during programming is what happens later on the real measuring machine. The time required to start the measuring run on the measuring machine is reduced enormously.
Measuring and evaluating made easy
CALYPSO offers interactive guidance during each phase of the measuring run. CALYPSO supports single-point measuring, scanning and optical measuring, and permits a plan/actual comparison of prismatic workpieces. The software thus enables form inspections on geometric features and digitization of unknown models. All features and geometries can be reliably inspected with scanning.
CALYPSO shows possible deviations from the nominal form. The measuring results can be displayed in accordance with the user’s requirements; reports can be customized. The measurement log is provided in a standardized form, either QDAS or DMIS. Measuring results can be transferred to SPC software.
VAST® navigator delivers a very essential benefit while measuring with CALYPSO: the software selects the optimum scanning speed of the coordinate measuring machine for each feature depending on the stylus geometry and the specified tolerances. The speed is very high with a rough tolerance and rigid stylus; just high enough with a narrow tolerance to ensure that the tolerance is not exceeded. Operators can be sure that scanning is always performed at an optimum speed and always with sufficient safety reserves.
