O-INSPECT from Carl Zeiss: Particularly Effective Optical and Contact Measuring

The O-INSPECT multi-sensor measuring machine enables sensor change without interrupting the CNC measuring run

O-INSPECT multi-sensor measuring machine performs both optical and contact measurements on small parts particularly effectively.

Oberkochen, Germany – October 24, 2007 — The new O-INSPECT multi-sensor measuring machine from Carl Zeiss Industrielle Messtechnik GmbH increases efficiency during the inspection of small and complex parts. Operators can alternate between optical and contact measurements without interrupting the CNC measuring run. O-INSPECT combines high flexibility with highly reproducible results in one measuring run and one setting – in both the measuring lab and production. O-INSPECT works with proven ZEISS sensors: a new, accurate and very flexible 12x zoom lens from Carl Zeiss is used in addition to the VAST® XXT scanning sensor. CALYPSO® CAD-based software automatically displays the operating functions for optical measuring as soon as the optical sensor is active.

O-INSPECT is particularly used for the quality assurance and initial sampling of small, complex parts in the plastics, medical and automobile industries and precision mechanics. This measuring machine unites high flexibility with highly reproducible results in one measuring run and one setting. Proven ZEISS scanning technology and ZEISS optics provide the foundation for this outstanding machine.

Additional optical functions were added to CAD-based CALYPSO software for O-INSPECT. Carl Zeiss' expertise in scanning technology and optical applications enables the total integration of both options and their capabilities into one software package. It is used to calibrate, program, measure and analyze.

Multi-sensor system improves measuring productivity
The heart of O-INSPECT is the sensor unit consisting of ZEISS sensors: the proven VAST XXT scanning sensor is used for contact measurements. The optical sensor is a unit from an IP-CAM and a precise and very flexible 12x zoom lens from Carl Zeiss. O-INSPECT is configured in a way that allows the sensors to be automatically switched at any time during CNC operation.

The optical sensor is used not only with small features, soft or sensitive materials, but also when part throughput is important. A sophisticated, multi-color illumination system with high-power LEDs, multi-sector ring light, coaxial light, and transmitted and external light create the good contrast needed for optical measuring.

Large bores and contours are scanned with VAST XXT or inspected using point-to-point measuring. Different stylus combinations increase flexibility during a measurement. Automatic or manual stylus change: the sensor recognizes the stylus, eliminating the need for time-consuming recalibration. CALYPSO automatically displays the operating functions for optical measuring as soon as the optical sensor is active.

Production-capable machine
O-INSPECT meets the demands for high part throughput, high measuring accuracy, and fast and easy operation also in production. This required enclosed guideways, an integrated damping system, highly dynamic drives, automatic drive monitoring and CAA (Computer Controlled Accuracy). The fixed bridge and the moving measuring table permit three-sided access and easy connection to a pallet feed system during loading and stylus change. O-INSPECT is quickly operational and easy to use. O-INSPECT can be quickly moved with a forklift if required by the production process. After that, simply turn on the machine and continue measuring.
