BATTELLE HELPS BRING NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MARKET

Medrad launches the XDS™ extravasation detector

Columbus, OH – July 16, 2007 — Battelle and MEDRAD, INC., recently announced the launch of the MEDRAD XDS™ Extravasation Detector, a technology that enhances the safety of contrast media injection through early detection of extravasations.

Seeking a partner with strong product innovation and development skills to assist in this effort, MEDRAD turned to Battelle—specifically Battelle Medical Device Solutions.

"During the course of the project, Battelle demonstrated complex problem solving abilities and drove much of the innovation in the final product," said Doug Descalzi, executive director, CT New Product Development at MEDRAD. "Their contributions were a key success factor in achieving the program's objectives."

Working closely from technology exploration through product development, MEDRAD and Battelle jointly invented the electrical permittivity technology that enables XDS™ and developed the commercial product. XDS™ continuously monitors the tissue immediately surrounding and directly beneath the injection site for changes in relative permittivity signaling fluid accumulation.

"In addition to providing the market with a long-sought solution to real-time extravasation detection through the invention of the electrical permittivity approach, the development team had to apply substantial creative energy to envision and design a novel sensor and unique detection algorithm," stated Daniel Kramer, Battelle Medical Device Solutions project manager. Kramer also noted that XDS™ provides the first practical, reliable, and economical alternative to the current method of visual observation or physical palpitation of an injection site for the detection of fluids in the surrounding tissue.
