Demand for RF Welding Technology Drives Expansion for Genesis Plastics Welding
Indiana-based Company Hires Key Staff and Plans to Double Facility Square-Footage INDIANAPOLIS (September 17, 2009) – Genesis Plastics Welding, a leading contract manufacturer of radiofrequency (RF) welded products, announces plans for a major expansion of its Indiana facilities. Genesis will double the size of its facilities, allowing the company to significantly increase production of thermoplastic products in response to industry demand. In addition, Genesis nearly doubled its management team and increased its product engineering resources. Due to increasing demand across all industries for contract plastics welding manufacturers to help organizations lower manufacturing costs, quicken production turnaround and increase the quality of their products, Genesis is in the unique position of needing to expand its facilities and add staff. "We're excited that this growth allows us to not only expand our company, but also positively impact Indiana's workforce," stated Tom Ryder, vice president of sales and marketing for Genesis Plastics Welding. Genesis plans to move into its new facility near Indianapolis within six months and hire additional staff to further accommodate this growth. The addition of the new facility — in close proximity to the company's existing location — will provide Genesis with nearly 50,000 square feet of production, packaging and office space. Examples of consumer and medical products manufactured by Genesis include blood pressure cuffs, inflatable bladders, hot and cold therapy packs, compression therapy sleeves, medical instrument covers and disposable heating blankets. Genesis attributes much of its growth to increasing demand for its unique plastics welding technology, ecoGenesis, which enables the RF welding of plastic materials previously considered difficult or impossible to heat seal without the addition of expensive — and often toxic — adhesives and plasticizers. This technology, which eliminates the need for these additives, will be demonstrated daily at the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) Expo in San Diego, Calif., September 23-25, 2009. Attendees may visit Genesis at Booth 1129. About Genesis Plastics Welding ###

Triple Ring Technologies Awarded NIH Challenge Grant
Grant for pediatric imaging development one of few awarded to non-academic institutions From NHLBI Director Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. "In the spirit of the Recovery Act, this research advances biomedical research while also retaining scientists to develop a technology with important public health benefits. The imaging system to be developed promises to reduce the radiation exposure of children having cardiac procedures, thereby potentially lowering their risk of cancer" NEWARK, California, October 7, 2009 – Triple Ring Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of early-stage advanced research and development services, today announced that it has been awarded a Challenge Grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The two-year $1 million grant, awarded through a highly competitive process with over 20,000 applications submitted, will fund the development of an X-ray imaging system for pediatric cardiac intervention. The pediatric system is based on ScanCath™ technology originally developed for Triple Ring partner NovaRay Medical and is expected to reduce the radiation dose to children by 75%, as compared to conventional systems. "Radiation dose in pediatric cardiac interventions is a serious concern, because children exposed to radiation have a far greater likelihood than adults to develop cancer in their lifetime," said Tobias Funk, PhD, physicist at Triple Ring Technologies and Principal Investigator on the grant. "This project is a great example of Triple Ring's ability to develop commercial instruments while competing at the forefront of scientific research." "We are very pleased that NIH has chosen Triple Ring as one of only a handful of companies to receive a Challenge Grant," said Joseph Heanue, PhD, President of Triple Ring Technologies. "This award further validates the breadth of our technical capabilities and the experience of our scientists and engineers." Plastic Tubing Manufacturer Takes Steps to Go Green
Benefits the Environment & Saves the Company 60% on Trash Disposal
"Let's face it," says Ken Baker, CEO. "It's tough for a company that manufactures plastic tubing to call itself green—most of today's plastics are petroleum-based. So we've made efforts to recycle more and to reduce our energy consumption in a number of ways." A few months ago NewAge reorganized its trash disposal program to include recycling and compacting. Interestingly the catalyst for the effort was a team member, not management or a local mandate. After a brief training class, coworkers became enthused about the program and quickly jumped on board. It's a simple process to sort trash into two cans—recyclable and non. Benefits were realized immediately. In addition to helping the environment, the company saw a cost savings of 60% in its trash hauling charges in the program's first five months. Recycling at work is raising green awareness at home, too. Team members are encouraged to bring in recyclable items, including plastics numbered 1 through 7, that their local municipalities do not accept. This keeps more trash out of landfills. Recent building upgrades at the company's headquarters and manufacturing facility in Southampton, PA, include:
As NewAge continues to expand its clean room facilities for the production of AdvantaPure Single Use Systems (SUS) for the pharmaceutical market, it incorporates building upgrades such as new light fixtures and energy efficient ventilation systems. Late last year NewAge stopped printing a full-line product catalog. The 120-page book had been the staple of the company's sales force for decades, and discontinuing it was a heated topic among team members. The company decided to print smaller, material-focused books in house on an as-needed basis. The benefits include using much less paper, creating less waste, and allowing for up-to-date product specifications. It also helps shift customers and potential buyers to the company's web site, where PDF versions of each of the smaller catalogs are available. Interface Catheter Solutions HSO-250 Heat Setting Oven for PTA and PTCA Catheters is Compact, Easy to Operate and Cost Effective
Interface uses the HSO-250 for its contract manufacturing of balloon catheters and has observed an overall reduction in the wrapped balloon profile by several French sizes when unsheathed shortly after wrapping. This lower profile is particularly useful when a stent is to be crimped on the catheter. The HSO-250 facilitates the manufacture of balloon catheters with low profile sheath compatibility. The HSO-250 multiple balloon catheter heat chambers have precise and uniform temperature control. The front panel chambers can accommodate balloon lengths up to 150 mm while the side panel chambers are capable of heat setting longer length balloons up to 250 mm. Each heat chamber has a tapered guide for easy insertion and to keep the sheathed balloon centered, preventing bending and eliminating direct contact. The heater remains on and maintains the preset temperature for consistent results and reduced cycle times. The HSO-250 is simple to operate for repeatable results. Interface Catheter Solutions is the only vertically integrated provider of outsourced solutions for catheter manufacturing. Interface has been solely focused on the balloon catheter market since 1995 and continually sets industry standards through process and equipment advancements in catheter manufacturing. Interface has created more than 2,000 balloon designs, and offers balloon and catheter design and development, extruded balloon tubing, balloon contract manufacturing, catheter contract manufacturing, plus a comprehensive line of balloon catheter production and testing equipment. Metal Pushbutton Switch with Ceramic Actuator Offers Breakthrough Switching Technology
Ceramic material enhances illumination, thwarts destructable elements, is biocompatible
The switch is available with or without illumination. The non-illuminated version offers a translucent white actuating surface. Black lettering can be applied directly onto the ceramic material. The composition of the base material, and the lettering process, accounts for the actuator's resistance to scratches and common cleaning agents. The illuminated version is uniformly lit across the entire surface of the actuator. Lettering and symbols can be applied for a positive effect or conversely through the use of negative lettering to produce the inverse effect. These new innovative features extend the range of application possibilities in products such as vending equipment, ticketing machines, restaurant processing equipment, public restrooms and other sanitary utilities, as well as medical equipment designed for hypoallergenic environments. The MSM CS stands up to vandal attacks. It has a very low profile of 1.7mm, which prevents impact to the switch from the side. The switch front withstands a high level of impact with a rating of IK07 and has an IP 69K protection class rating for seal-tight protection against liquids and common chemical agents. The MSM CS microswitch is UL, CSA and ENEC approved and is available in 19 mm and 22 mm mounting diameters. Different switch configurations are offered over a range of 30 VDC to 250 VAC. Current rating ranges from 0.1 to 10 A, depending on switching voltage. The MSM CS is equipped with quick connect terminals to allow for easy assembly. The microswitch is pre-wired in the assembly and then snapped onto the switch housing. The MSM CS is packaged 10 pieces per box and pricing starts at around $18.00 per piece in quantities of 100. Gore Introduces SPEC-Compliant, Passive 10 Meer SFP+ Cable
Through the use of patented GORE™ EYE-OPENER+® Conductor Technology and an extremely low loss expanded PTFE cable dielectric, Gore is able to balance the dWDP (waveform distortion penalty) and VMA loss (voltage modulation amplitude) parameters to achieve results within the specification limits set forth by the SFF-8431 committee. Gore has demonstrated typical values for VMA loss of 3.95 dBe and a dWDP of 5.60 dBe. The SFF-8431 specification calls out maximum limits of 4.40 and 6.75, respectively. Gore's proprietary expanded PTFE is branded as GORE-TEX® in the fabrics market. Russ Hornung, Product Manager at Gore, comments, "We continue to meet the challenges of the industry and set the benchmark for performance. Quite frankly, we utilize better processes and materials in both our cable and our connector printed circuit boards. Combined with our unique technologies, this allows us to offer a product that is more economical, more efficient, and also more robust than fiber optic transceivers for the critical 10 meter use length for rack-to-rack installations. Additional operational cost savings are realized with this product since it doesn't generate the heat of optical transceivers." Chris Ericksen, Application Engineer at Gore, adds, "Our unique material set allows us to develop a product that further extends the useful length of passive copper. We see a market that seems to struggle to achieve 5 to 7 meter use lengths reliably." Chris highlights, "The SFF specification was written around the best conventional 8.5 meter cable that the committee identified as being interoperable. They measured the performance and then added margin. Thus, the VMA and dWDP values reflect a maximum 7 meter for a good cable, or something less for a marginal cable. The fact that we can go another 40% is quite remarkable and is a testament to our superior materials and processes." Since August 2008, Gore has offered both 7 and 8 meter SFP+ passive cables with significant performance margins. The addition of low-profile 2.10 mm cable in January 2009 and now the passive 10 meter cable round out a highly valued platform for Gore. Medical device manufacturer MRPC awarded ISO 13485 certification
Only 367 companies in U.S. have achieved this significant milestone BUTLER, Wis. (September 17, 2009) — MRPC (http://www.mrpcorp.com), a leading single-source provider of innovative medical device components and assemblies, announced today that it has received ISO 13485 certification. The certification covers all disciplines within the company. MRPC is also ISO 9001 certified. The certificate confirms that MRPC has successfully implemented a quality management system that matches the worldwide quality management system standard for medical devices. It demonstrates MRPC's ability to provide medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements. "We pursued ISO 13485 certification because ensuring delivery of the safest and most effective products possible better serves our customers," said Michael Dalton, director of quality at MRPC. "Producing high-quality components and assemblies keeps customers coming back and opens up new medical device markets for us in more sophisticated areas, including implantables." MRPC's sophisticated training and quality improvement programs, together with its experience, made seeking the ISO 13485 certification a logical next step. In addition, MRPC is finding that, more and more, the medical device companies it works with want their partners to meet the same high regulatory standards that they do. "While the ISO 13485 certification is still in its infancy, we think that it will become a standard requirement of medical device manufactures within three to five years," Dalton said. "MRPC wanted to jump ahead of the curve to demonstrate that we offer our customers the best and most efficient services today." ISO 13485 is an International Organization for Standardization (IS0) standard that focuses on the unique and rigorous requirements for companies involved in the development of medical devices. Manufacturers must demonstrate that quality management systems are implemented and maintained to receive the certification, which addresses such quality issues as risk management, sterilization and traceability. Center Valley, Pa., September 18, 2009 — In fields as diverse as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, heavy machinery and medical devices, inspecting and analyzing residue on filters is key for documenting the purity and cleanliness of the manufacturing process and analyzing particles found in fluids. The Olympus Automated Filter Analysis System makes identifying, reporting and archiving images and information on residual particles fast, accurate and highly reliable. In a matter of minutes, the user receives statistical data relating to identified particles; then the information is documented and archived. The fully automated system is a combination of hardware and intuitive software designed to provide detailed data in compliance with many ISO and USP international standards (in particular ISO 4406, 16232 and USP 788). The Olympus Automated Filter Analysis System consists of a microscope, digital camera, and motorized stage with controller and analysis software. Particle-by-particle data is provided on every inspection, and records can be stored for an unlimited time. Data storage is automatic, and doesn't rely on users to remember how or where to archive data. Other advantages include the system's adherence to key international and/or user-definable standards, speed, enhancement of data integrity, and an automated one-touch function for extraordinary ease of use. The system is designed to work with standard 47mm filters. "Unlike manual optical inspection systems, the Olympus system, in less than two minutes, accurately detects, counts, classifies, and measures residue particulates in filters," said Linda Sikel, Product Manager for Industrial Microscopes at Olympus America. The hose handles steady or fluctuating temperatures between –80°F and 350°F (–62°C and 176°C). Silicone hose has long been used in the medical field, as it meets that industry's requirements for non-toxicity. Its other properties make it well suited for industries such as food and beverage, chemical, appliance, computer, and more recently, alternative energy. Silbrade is made from FDA-sanctioned ingredients and is listed by the National Sanitation Foundation for use with food equipment materials (NSF 51). It is odorless, tasteless, unaltered by the effects of weather, and generally exhibits inertness toward U.V., radiation, and ozone. Silbrade is a peroxide-cured product manufactured in a controlled environment for cleanliness. The hose is stocked in nine sizes from 1/8" through 1" I.D.; other sizes are available through custom order. Additional customization includes cut-to-length pieces, colors, and hardnesses. Customers Design Reid Supply's New Web Site
Reid Supply Company, a leading supplier of industrial and technical parts and free CAD images to engineers, technicians and others has enhanced their web site with direct input from their customers. John Carrier, the company's President, says the new ReidSupply.com is all about ease of use with a new intuitive smarter search engine and a de-emphasis on marketing. The new site takes the customer exactly where they want to go faster and easier. Plus, the new site offers a Knowledge Base for engineers, machinists, hobbyists and scholars. Their repository of information features the free CAD library, a large collection of reference books, a free "Ask An Expert" feature, a free e-newsletter, free Resource Guides, special requests and more. Customers Design Reid Supply's New Web Site B2B
Muskegon, Michigan, July 7, 2009 – What Does It Take to Build a World-Class e-Commerce Web Site? According to the web services team at Reid Supply Company, a Michigan-based global distributor of industrial parts, components and supplies, all it takes is getting direct input from many customers, along with some savvy data managers, creative web designers and clever web developers to incorporate the customers' desires. In a continuing effort to improve the customer experience, the web development team at Reid Supply enlisted the help of long-time patrons to understand their ecommerce needs for industrial products. What they found was good news. "We discovered that we were on the right track with our developmental planning for the new ReidSupply.com," said Greg Palmer, Reid Supply Company's Director of Marketing. "In a survey sent out to thousands of customers, we learned that they wanted a simpler and more direct shopping experience. That was exactly what we were planning, and that is exactly what we've built." Part of that simpler experience involved Reid eliminating most of the marketing messages on the site. Their customers wanted better search results with less "marketing clutter" to get in the way of buying the products they wanted. On top of this, they added vital on-line account management for the customer. "We conducted a deep survey of Reid Customers and frankly, discovered a few problems," said Palmer. "We found out, through direct and indirect contact, that users wanted a better, smarter, search tool; they wanted an easier way to manage their on-line accounts; and they wanted a site that was clear of marketing clutter so that they could find the products that they needed faster." The Reid team realized from the survey that they had some pretty serious remodeling to do. Utilizing best web practices; smart data use; and some very creative programming and designing, they got to work. They determined the new site would need a lot of web images because they wanted it to be image-driven, as well as data searchable. The Reid team utilized all of their print catalog images, took photos of missing images, and utilized computer aided design (CAD) drawings, which are free to the customer, to give the site added functionality. According to the company, their new web site is much more than better data; an improved search experience was number one on the customers' request list. "The first thing we considered was how we could create a simpler and smarter search app that delivered what customers were looking for," said John Carrier, President of Reid Supply Company. "Our new Smarter Search function is very intuitive in the sense that as you are typing, it is auto-suggesting in a drop-down window. This can be very handy if you don't know exactly what you want. The search engine can be very helpful." Reid also simplified the look of the web site and virtually eliminated the marketing hype. There are still specials available like the Clearance Center, Deal of the Day, and Savings Spotlights, but they are only visible from a tab or on the right rail of the site. "It takes a great deal of planning to make a site this vast work," said Carrier. "It's an interesting marriage between our ERP system, our search engine, our database servers, our programming platform and a lot of programming to make it all work. We have a great web team to bring the marriage together." By all indications, Reid customers are delighted. Early responders have said that the new web site is more user friendly, and more importantly, more effective in guiding the user to the exact item they need much faster. "We didn't need an economic downturn to tell us that we needed to give the Customer exactly what they wanted," said Carrier. "We've always believed that and that is why our team is constantly gearing up with new technologies to improve the Customer's experience. There will always be new features that our Customers will ask for when shopping on-line and even now, having just launched the new site, we continue tweaking and improving the functionality daily." Reid is on the cutting edge of technology and offers free CAD drawings on more than 90% of everything on their web site, ReidSupply.com. "We have over 40,000 free CAD drawings that anyone can download," says Palmer. "This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, free CAD database in the industrial supply industry. It would be very beneficial for an engineer or technician in any industry to come to ReidSupply.com and simply download the CAD part they need for their engineering designs." The company's revamped web site offers a Knowledge Base for engineers, machinists, hobbyists and scholars. This repository of information features the free CAD library, a large collection of reference books, a free "Ask An Expert" feature, a free e-newsletter, free Resource Guides, special requests and more. Reid Supply Company, which started selling industrial supplies in 1948, serves virtually every industry with products ranging from clamps, to power transmission, to structural systems, to hardware and everything in between. "Our exclusive 12 color-coded category classification is great for folks who want to locate specific items with minimum effort," says Palmer. "We have organized all of our products into these 12 areas and color-coded them for easy reference and access." Reid's product offering features 12 color-coded categories as follows:
"We are always looking toward the future for our Customers," says Carrier. "As technology changes, so will we. But one thing will never change here, our rallying cry, 'while others may be bigger, nobody will serve the Customer better' which is really all about us staying at the forefront of serving everyone who shops the new ReidSupply.com." ###

Helix Medical Announces Scientific Injection Molding for Silicone
Gloucester, MA — June 16, 2009 — Helix Medical, LLC, a global manufacturer for the medical device, health care, pharmaceutical, biotech, and IVD industries, offers scientific injection molding (SIM) methodology for Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) molding at its medical device manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts and California. Scientific injection molding combines product design, tool design, material selection, and process development from the polymer point of view which allows control of the critical process parameters to ensure that parts are optimally produced with zero defects. This methodology has been employed for some time in thermoplastic injection molding but is relatively new to LSR molding. By applying the SIM process to LSR products Helix is able to develop processes where potential defects are identified upfront, before the validation stage, therefore saving clients time and money. The benefits of SIM include higher yields, lower material consumption, and increased process robustness driven by reliable documentation and data collection. The application of these principles delivers better flow control, fewer visual defects, and increases the part integrity thus delivering a lower cost which is passed on to Helix customers. "Scientific injection molding allows us to roduce consistent product quality through process repeatability from machine to machine, part to part, and set-up to set-up," said Edward Callahan, Vice President/General Manager, Helix Medical – Gloucester Operations. "This methodology has allowed us to provide the documented standardized processes and the quality assurance required to support our customers' regulatory requirements. We deliver superior value for our customers and partners by investing the time upfront during the development stage." For more information on Helix Medical – Gloucester Operations and scientific injection molding please contact Edward Callahan, Vice President/General Manager at (978) 281-2023. Product Development Technologies (PDT) and Perkins Honored for Design Anticipated to Improve the Lives of the Blind and Visually Impaired for Years to Come
The Next Generation™ Perkins/APH Brailler Wins Acclaim from BusinessWeek
The IDEA program is the premier international competition honoring design excellence in products, ecodesign, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts. The 2009 jury includes 20 world-renowned designers and design thinkers who spent weeks previewing entries online and two-and-a-half days of intense, face-to-face evaluation and debate on IDEA. The IDEA 2009 judging was based on a product's innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to society and natural ecology, benefit to the client, visual appeal and appropriate aesthetics, usability testing and internal factors and methods. The Next Generation™ Perkins/APH Brailler® excellence lies in its potential to be a life-changing product, one determining the difference between a life of literacy or illiteracy; a life with or without employment; a life full of productive independence or codependence. In the United States, 70% of citizens who are blind are unemployed or underemployed. However, 80% of those who use braille are employed. In other words, literacy reverses the numbers. This is a very real scenario for people who are blind in the US and around the world. "One of the chief goals of re-designing the classic Perkins Brailler®," says Perkins Products General Manager David Morgan, "was to make this indispensable communication tool easier to carry and more convenient to use. The response we have had so far to the Next Generation™ Perkins Brailler is resoundingly positive. Lighter-weight materials plus the more comfortable handle design means that more braille users than ever can take the world's most ubiquitous braille writing tool wherever they want to use it. In other words, this design brings hard-copy braille into more places, more easily, for more people than ever thought possible." The award winning brailler came to fruition fifty seven years after the original Perkins Brailler was introduced by Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, where both Helen Keller and Laura Bridgman studied. The partnership between Perkins Products, APH and PDT made the development of this uniquely challenging project possible. "Given the importance of this product to so many people, we were honored to participate in its development and are thrilled it's receiving this highly coveted recognition," said Mark Schwartz, PDT President. IDSA has been honoring design excellence via the IDEA Awards since 1980. About Perkins About PDT

Watlow Introduces ULTRAMIC™ 600, an Advanced Ceramic Heater with Low Leakage Current with Ultimate Patient Safety in Mind
St. Louis — Watlow, a St. Louis-based provider of thermal solutions, introduces its ULTRAMIC™ 600 advanced ceramic heater. The high thermal conductivity aluminum nitride (AIN) ceramic composition is paired with a proprietary, thermally matched, heating element to enable a fast responding heater configured in a low mass package. "Watlow's R&D team developed the ULTRAMIC 600 heater to meet the low leakage requirements found in medical device equipment," said Dr. Hongy Lin, principal scientist. "Numerous hours of life testing and development of proprietary techniques and practices have made all of this possible." With a leakage current of less than 10ìA, the ULTRAMIC 600 heater makes it easier for medical devices to pass the 500ìA, IEC 60601, total system requirement the first time. Plus, the ULTRAMIC 600 can often eliminate a low voltage AC or DC medical grade power supply. "With less heat and weight, your electronics package can be made smaller and lighter to the advantage of your customers," added Dr. Lin. The construction technique of the ULTRAMIC 600 heater is to sinter the ceramic at elevated temperatures to create a monolithic, geometrically stable structure. The result is a very low porosity, homogeneous, robust heater assembly that provides the necessary heat transfer for high temperature and long heater life. Constructing an electric heater using sintered ceramic materials provides many benefits including high dielectric strength, a leakage current of less than 10ìA, uniform temperatures, high durability at low mass, a rapid ramp rate and an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion. Watlow's ULTRAMIC 600 heater can operate up to 600°C (1112°F) with a ramp rate of up to 150°C (270°F) per second depending on the application, heater design and process parameters. This heater also contains a unique (patent pending) integrated thermocouple configuration that improves the reliability of the sensor/heater interface to ensure fast responsiveness during high ramp rate applications. Watlow's ULTRAMIC 600 heater is available in either rectangle or ring forms and can be machined to meet specific design requirements including holes, vacuum grooves or ultra-fine surface finishes. Xact Wire EDM Corporation celebrates their 25th anniversary.
Company established June 1984 "The last five years have been more interesting and challenging than the first twenty!" John Dora "Our culture of continuous improvement and our employee's willingness to learn has contributed greatly to our success." Jeff Gubbins July 3, 2009 — Xact Wire EDM was founded in 1984 by Jeff Gubbins and John Dora. Prior to starting Xact, the two owners worked together for five years and held common beliefs about how to properly treat employees and customers. They also believed that to succeed, they needed to listen very closely to their customers, constantly hire and train good people, frequently acquire new advanced technology, always strive to improve, and be willing to quickly move into new application areas. From the very beginning, Xact was dedicated to providing the very best wire EDM service to customers in all industries. Xact is still keenly focused on wire EDM and continues to function as an extension of their customers own capabilities. Xact started in 1984 with one wire EDM machine in a small rental space. With little financial resources to support them in the beginning, those first years were challenging, but also interesting and exciting. Most customers were local stamping die and mold makers. Xact grew rapidly and added an additional wire EDM machines about every six months. In 1986, Xact acquired a machine and the software for 4-axis (independent U-V) cutting and automatic wire threading. In 1989 Xact constructed a temperature controlled 10,000 square foot facility designed specifically for wire EDM. In 1994, Xact opened a fully equipped branch location in Cary, Illinois to provide better service to Chicago area customers. Additional growth required the addition of 5,000 square feet in Wisconsin in 2005 and the addition of several machines with the latest linear motor technology. Since Xact's founding, outstanding quality systems have been in place. Due to its far-reaching geographic expansion and new markets, Xact pursued and received ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2007. Xact has always heavily invested in support equipment for it's wire machines. Xact has multiple programming stations, high-speed small hole machines, video inspection systems, coordinate measuring machines, and part marking machines (pin stamping and laser). Xact has grown into a company with the resources and experience to handle the most demanding requirements in all industries. Many dedicated employees have been with Xact for many years. They have learned a great deal by listening closely to customers and by being focused on one field – wire EDM.

"It takes a great deal of planning to make a site this vast work,” said Carrier. "We have organized all of our products into these 12 areas and color-coded them for easy reference and access." Reid's product offering features 12 color-coded categories as follows: "We are always looking toward the future for our Customers," says Carrier. "As technology changes, so will we. But one thing will never change here, our rallying cry, 'while others may be bigger, nobody will serve the Customer better' which is really all about us staying at the forefront of serving everyone who shops the new ReidSupply.com." ###

However, starting in 2008 electronic submissions more than doubled, and will most likely at least triple this year. At the end of 2008, 11% of MDRs came via eMDR. So is it time to start thinking about transitioning to eMDR? Most likely say experts from the FDA. According to Indira Konduri, "“Get an early start now. We're here to help and give personalized attention. Assistance from the FDA will be easier now — before it's mandatory — and you'll be ready to go when eMDR is mandated." SPEAKER: Tamar June, Vice President, Marketing, AssurX Inc. AGENDA: The discussion will focus on the understanding of Electronic Medical Device Reporting (eMDR):

This system, designed by two engineers of LMS, prevents almost all fluid and pressure loss when a cannula passes through. Another benefit of the system is that it can be used for multiple insertions and withdrawals, while continuing to prevent pressure loss. Because each application is unique, LMS engineers will work with customers to customize the system to meet specific needs and requirements. This innovative technology will increase the options for medical procedures where control of pressure or fluid loss is critical. This breakthrough design allows LMS to further bring increased efficiencies and enhanced performance to various devices used in medical procedures as a total solutions provider. LMS Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Justin Sessink, stated "As our success in the medical market continues to increase, this new system is one more innovative solution we’ve developed to help meet our customers' challenges." LMS has been able to leverage its years of experience working with the medical market to develop this new system to integrate elastomeric valves into thermoplastic components. Not only do the valves play an important role in the new CannuSeal System, but the design of the plastic is critical in allowing the valves to seal securely during procedures with the least amount of resistance. An engineer at a major medical-device design firm recently told LMS "... your valves are some of the most resistance-free seals in the market." LMS is demonstrating this product at Booth 2554 to allow individuals to test how this unique system works. The new CannuSeal System - more proof that LMS is the cure for the common valve. LMS was founded in 1985 and remains a pioneer in the liquid silicone rubber molding industry. Since the invention of its proprietary process for silicone molding, LMS has grown to be one of the top three liquid silicone rubber molders in the world. With manufacturing capabilities in the U.S., Europe, China, and Mexico, LMS designs and manufactures critical flow control valves and components for a diverse list of key global markets, including commercial food and beverage, hygiene and personal care, medical device, analytical testing, packaging, and more. Avicenna Technology Specializies In Laser Machining Polyimide Tubing Components For Enhanced Functionality
Polyimide is a thermoset polymer made stronger by the introduction of heat in its curing process. Cured polyimide offers very strong mechanical and dielectric properties and provides superior stability when faced with chemical exposure and high temperatures. The thermoset nature of polyimide means that once cured, the material cannot be subsequently reflowed or melted. Such tubing offers medical device designers tight-tolerance components with superior column strength that transmit directional and torsional forces. Polyimide tubing can be further enhanced by customizing the component with expanded or reduced diameters, flared or tapered tips, cut holes or slots, and even marking or etching for identification. Advantages to laser machining polyimide tubing include: allowing distinct customization of a tubing that is otherwise difficult to modify; providing a flexible and amendable tooling discipline that does not require expensive hard-tooling; and accommodating rapid prototyping, design feasibility, and proof-of-concept services for design engineers. Avicenna uses Laser, Mechanical and Organizational Energy combined with sophisticated automation to prototype, plan, and manufacture products made from a wide range of materials. As an innovative manufacturer and solution provider, Avicenna bridges the technology-solution gap between customer ideas and commercialized products — products that change the way we live. Going for Gold: SafeEdge Wins SPE Thermoforming Division Award
SafeEdge is an industry first, based on its inward flange technology that eliminates the sharp edges found on a typical thermoformed tray. It was designed specifically for the medical industry to address the growing number of sterile breaches due to pouch punctures. Many medical device manufacturers require the rigidity of a tray for packaging, however, this tray is often placed inside a pouch versus a die cut lid to reduce cost. The interaction between the sharp flange of the rigid tray and the pouch can cause a breach of the sterile barrier. SafeEdge greatly reduces, or eliminates, this negative interaction. To execute the inward flange technology, Plastic Ingenuity utilized its expertise in thermoform machine building, thermoforming, and tool building to design and build a specialized inward flange thermoforming machine to produce this unprecedented plastic package. Winning the SPE Gold Award for SafeEdge is an honor for Plastic Ingenuity, who has been providing innovative thermoforming solutions since 1972. Plastic Ingenuity Wins 2009 AmeriStar Award
Packages are judged based on various criteria determined for excellence in multiple categories. These categories include: innovation, product protection, economics, package performance, marketing, and environmental impact. Upon project initiation, it was determined that the most important aspects of this package were the protection of the bone dissection tool, sterility, and accessibility. With this clear and determined focus, Plastic Ingenuity and Anspach worked together to develop a package that addressed these critical features. The previous package was not form fit, so the tool was able to move inside the package. Plastic Ingenuity was able to address this concern by designing the package with a snap feature that holds the tool firmly in place, yet loose enough that a gloved healthcare professional can easily remove the tool from the clamshell. The next challenge to address was accessibility. Prior to re-design, Anspach's bone dissection tool package was a capped tube that complicated the loading and removal of the tool. The new design incorporated a space for fingers to grip the device and remove, providing the end user with an easy open, trouble-free entrance to the tool. Other key characteristics were considered for this award. The new package has resulted in a reduction of more than 50 percent in packaging and processing time, and has a more integrated assembly. It also accommodates 70% of Anspach's dissection tools, although they are different in length, they all have the same diameter, and snap into the package perfectly. The Anspach Bone Dissection Clamshell by Plastic Ingenuity is a direct result of communication and feedback from the customer, a focused and uncompromising vision, and design innovation: all vital ingredients to creating an award winning package. Plastic Ingenuity has been a national leader in the light gauge custom thermoforming industry since 1972, and continues to pace the industry with its unparalleled innovation and R&D. Quick-Med and Avery Dennison Enter Into Joint Development Agreement
Companies to Pursue Development of NIMBUS® Antimicrobial Technology for Adhesives to Combat Infections Will Bring Highly Effective, Non-Leaching, and Affordable Barrier Protection to the Multi-Billion Global Medical Adhesives Market
"We are excited to team with Avery Dennison Corporation to incorporate our advanced NIMBUS technology in adhesives," said J. Ladd Greeno, CEO of Quick-Med Technologies. "Avery Dennison is the respected leader in developing advanced adhesives to meet the requirements of medical device manufacturers. This collaboration will leverage NIMBUS technology to a next generation of antimicrobial adhesives to address growing infection concerns." "Our partnership with Quick-Med will enable us to bring innovative, next-generation antimicrobial technology to meet the needs of both existing and potential customers," said Kevin Young, Vice President & General Manager of Avery Dennison Corporation. "NIMBUS technology will continue Avery Dennison innovation firsts by bringing much needed, uniquely effective and affordable, non-leaching antimicrobial protection to applications for the medical devices market." What makes NIMBUS different from other antimicrobial technology is its permanent bond and its ability to be effective even in the presence of large amounts of serum and body fluids. The active agent is permanently bonded to the substrate, keeping the biocide from depletion or leaching antimicrobials into the wound, while killing microbes (such as MRSA, VRE, and many others) that are present on the device. Being bound to the substrate keeps the antimicrobial at full strength; test results show that even in 90% serum, NIMBUS continues to kill microbes outperforming other antimicrobials. About NIMBUS® NIMBUS is a next-generation antimicrobial technology that is non-leaching, non-toxic, long-lasting and not blocked by organics such as blood, urine and perspiration. According to Gregory Schultz, Professor, Institute for Wound Research at the University of Florida and Past President of the Wound Healing Society, "NIMBUS poses no danger of bacteria developing resistance, or of releasing toxic material into the wound and impeding the wound healing process. It is a novel technology: bonded and effective even in high concentrations of body fluids." About Avery Dennison Corporation Avery Dennison is a recognized industry leader that develops innovative identification and decorative solutions for businesses and consumers worldwide. The Company's products include pressure-sensitive labeling materials; graphics imaging media; retail apparel ticketing and branding systems; RFID inlays and tags; office products; specialty tapes; and a variety of specialized labels for automotive, industrial and durable goods applications. New quick-locking pin revolutionizes assembly operations
SLIC is an acronym for Self Locking Implanted Cotter, and as the name implies, the pin is secure and self locking through the use of an implanted plunger (locking detent) that effectively functions as a self-contained cotter pin. The pin features a solid, spring loaded "wedge shaped plunger" that combines ease of use with secure fastening. The wedge shaped plunger easily and automatically retracts when the pin is inserted into a hole. The angled, ramp-like face of the wedge ensures smooth insertion. Once fully inserted, the plunger springs back up, locking the pin into the application. The vertical face at the rear of the plunger prevents the pin from backing out. The SLIC™ Pin is intended for use as a semi-permanent quick locking pin and can be used in a multitude of applications. It replaces other labor intensive fastening combinations such as a clevis pin & cotter pin, a pin and retaining ring or a nut and bolt. It is used in the same manner as the aforementioned, but has much improved functionality and ease of assembly. The plunger is as strong as a respective cotter pin. The simple, one-piece design means easier, safer and faster assembly speeds. No tools are needed, there are no sharp ends as with cotter pins and there are less items to purchase and inventory. The SLIC Pin™ is especially beneficial in applications with blind holes and/or space constraints. The SLIC Pin™ is quickly and easily inserted from just one side. Unlike other tedious fastening methods, there is no need to access the other side to secure another fastener such as a cotter pin, a nut or a clip. The SLIC™ Pin can be configured to suit individual applications. It can be produced in a Clevis Pin head style, grab ring style or others styles. Various pin materials and finishes are available. DDL's "Packaging Quizzler" Recognizes Medical Device Packaging Professionals Knowledge of how Integrity is Maintained Throughout the Packaging Lifecycle
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — April 14, 2009 (www.testedandproven.com) — DDL, leader in medical device package, product and material testing, announced that via findings from their March "Packaging Quizzler" more than 60 percent of medical device packaging professionals understand which tests are necessary to ensure integrity is maintained throughout the validation process. The most recent "Packaging Quizzler" quizzed medical device packaging professionals on which physical tests are used to ensure medical device package integrity is maintained throughout the packaging lifecycle. The winner, Michael Grimm, of Synthes, used his knowledge of the importance of package leak testing to correctly answer the quizzler question. "I've worked in package testing for pharmaceuticals and medical devices for 11 years," Grimm said. "I am also an active member of the ASTM F02.40 subcommittee on Package Integrity, so the answer was clear to me." It's a common assumption that this test proves sterility when instead it proves that the package is still intact and has not been compromised. "After accelerated aging and distribution simulation testing package leak testing is used to ensure that the sterile barriers of the packaging system haven't been compromised throughout the validation process," Scott Levy, DDL Packaging Engineer, said. GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers Introduces Cleaner, "Greener" TPEs for Medical Tubing
New VERSAFLEX™ grades are made without phthalates and halogens and are exceptionally low in extractables
ANAHEIM, Calif. — February 10, 2009 — GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, a PolyOne business and global leader in high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), will exhibit a new portfolio of materials at MDM West in booth #1455. These five VERSAFLEX™ HC TPE materials comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, are made without phthalates or halogens, and feature extremely low extractables. Concerns about the impact of plastics on health, safety and the environment are causing medical device manufacturers to take a hard look at traditional polymer materials that incorporate halogens, utilize phthalate-based plasticizers, or present the risk of extractables. These five FDA-compliant materials provide customers with new choices for designing safer, cleaner and more eco-conscious medical tubing. Choosing VERSAFLEX HC TPE can help tubing manufacturers comply with current and anticipated regulations while delivering high performance and quality. "There's currently a lot of discussion about the health risks of phthalates and other plastic additives, and although the jury is still out, the clear trend is for increasing restrictions in the use of these substances," said Joe Kutka, technology launch manager, GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers. "Added to this is the mandate to create products that can be recycled or, alternatively, incinerated or disposed of without releasing halogens. To help our customers stay on top of upcoming regulations, we've created a full portfolio of recyclable, medical-grade TPEs that avoid phthalates and halogens and provide many desirable properties." The VERSAFLEX HC product family comprises five grades: three offer high clarity for applications such as IV tubing, and the other two are translucent and provide excellent high-temperature performance for autoclaving. All grades can be extruded or injection molded, offering manufacturers the option to use a single material for both tubing and connectors.
As a leading custom TPE compounder, GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers offers extensive resources for customizing these VERSAFLEX grades to meet specific requirements for feel, modulus, hardness and other properties. New GORE™ Adsorbent Filter Streamlines Medical Device Manufacturing
GORE™ Adsorbent Filters reduce device manufacturing costs in several ways. First, device manufacturers can avoid the capital investment in equipment and operating expenses for filter assembly — including raw material and filter scrap — and reduce manufacturing and quality assurance overhead. Second, filter integration processes and equipment can be simplified because of a simple peel-and-stick method. Third, manufacturers can streamline the supply chain and consolidate their supplier base. These cost reductions lead to productivity gains in operations. According to Tom Quinci, Gore's North American medical filtration product manager, one of Gore's core values is to develop products based on the specific need of our customers and the requirements of their device, a value they call fitness for use. "In working with medical device manufacturers, we found they were using complicated processes to produce filter subassemblies. Universally, production groups wanted a combined product. 'We're not a filter company, we make medical devices,' one customer explained. In the end, we developed a product to meet the needs of a broad customer base." This new filter combines filtration and adsorption media with a flexible automation process to produce cost-effective adsorption filters. Quinci adds, "Our product testing has confirmed the filter's performance and verified its most important functionality – liquid retention. The GORE™ Adsorbent Filter simplifies our customers' manufacturing processes and enhances the performance of their devices." W. L. Fast Cure Medical Adhesive to the Rescue
Hackensack, NJ. February 25, 2009 — Master Bond EP3HTMED represents a breakthrough in medical adhesive technology. It combines the ease of fast curing with a "no-mix" one part epoxy yet it fully complies with USP Class Vl requirements for biocompatibility. This adhesive system exhibits an almost instant cure, rare in such a high strength epoxy, requiring as little as 5 minutes at 300°F to cure. It is extremely durable, has excellent adhesion and optimizes productivity. The one part, heat curing medical device adhesive produces high strength bonds, particularly in the lap shear mode, over the wide service temperature range of ‑60°F to 400°F. EP3HTMED withstands impact, vibration and stress fatigue cracking while maintaining the moisture, creep and corrosion resistance typical of epoxy adhesives. It possesses superior chemical resistance, particularly to chemical sterilants, as well as to other types of sterilization including ETO, radiation and autoclaving. EP3HTMED adheres well to a wide variety of substrates including glass, ceramics, most plastics and is excellent for bonding metals. Finally, the one part no-mix feature allows for unlimited working life, as the material will not cure unless heated to 250°F. The medical adhesive can improve the design of joints and the assembly of disposable and reusable medical devices, as well as in the production of medical electronics, especially where high adhesive performance and speed of production are paramount. When needed, the pores on the tube can be manufactured close enough together to support the transfer of fluids without leakage.
The general basis of inductive encoders is that the inductance of one or more coils changes in relation to the material used. For example, a semi-circular iron core representing the material measure could be directed to a coil which then changes its inductance. However, there are drawbacks to simple inductive encoders, such as the temperature dependence of the soft iron/ferrite. External magnetic fields can also change the permeability of the material used, well below saturation point.
