CLOSURES

Offer Control and Safety

Closures provide ease of opening, tamper evidence, and child resistance.

A wide variety of caps and closure systems are designed to protect the contents of a container. Liners, overwraps, and special features add even more protection. Suppliers have focused on ease of use and control over the product to help end-users take or apply the pharmaceutical product accurately. Suppliers offer caps in many sizes that are standard, child resistant, or tamper evident, allowing pharmaceutical companies to choose the style that fits the needs of their customers exactly.

Overwraps ensure that products arrive clean and intact, and they eliminate the need for boxes. A company provides plastic shrink sleeves and overwrap materials such as heat-shrink PVC and POF films. These materials offer good seals and controlled shrinkage in a range of gauges and widths for manual and semiautomatic shrink packaging lines. The selection of shrink sleeves includes unprinted and printed full-body decorative labels, tamper-evident neck bands, promotional sleeves, and multipack bands. Maxson Corp., Elk Grove, IL.

A line of closures is suitable for the healthcare market. This product line includes the LCC-2 tablet dispenser, HSL screw closures, TI2000 tamper-indicating closures, FG push-and-turn child-resistant closures, Squeeze-Lok Low Profile (SQL-LP) closures, and Pharma bottles. The SQL-LP is compatible with multiple liner materials for dry products and is available with a linerless inverse tamper seal for liquids. Sizes include 24, 28, 33, and 38 mm. Rexam Closures, Evansville, IN.

A squeeze-to-open dispensing hinge cap offers child-resistant capability. One version snaps on the bottle neck to prevent cap removal; the sides of the lid are squeezed, allowing the lug to release the lid for opening. These caps feature a variety of openings for liquids or tablets. Another version offers child-resistant capability with both the lid and the base portion. Carow Packaging, Crystal Lake, IL.

A flip-top closure is designed to be easy to open and control. The Contour cap is a single-handed closure measuring 27 mm that is opened and closed with the thumb. The company offers stock and custom closures, including tamper-evident, child-resistant, and wide-mouthed styles. Zeller Plastik, Libertyville, IL.

Two lines of closures are designed for user convenience. The Flapper line of closures offers one-hand dispensing and eliminates the need for users to remove the closure completely to gain access to the contents of the package. The Top-Squeeze line features an easy half-turn opening method that is quick and easy to achieve, even for seniors. The caps reclose in a secure, child-resistant mode. Weatherchem Corp., Twinsburg, OH.

Vented foam and heat induction foil liners allow the free passage of air while stopping fluids and microbiological contaminants. The AirFoil vented heat induction foil liners provide seal integrity and tamper evidence at an economical price, says the company. All AirFoil heat induction liners use Circumvent, a microporous, hydrophobic membrane that stops liquids but allows the free passage of air. Various melt layers are used to ensure compatibility with a variety of plastic containers. Circumvent is also available in a foam liner format. It can be modified to alter its air flow, hydrophobic properties, or location on the liner. AirFoil and Circumvent are offered in roll format or in a broad range of standard or child-resistant closures. Performance Systematix Inc., Caledonia, MI.
