Permalith Introduces Fully Plastic Compliance Package

The PermaSafe blister package's all-plastic layup promotes F=1 child resistance and package durability.

Permalith Plastics LLC (Pennsauken, NJ) has developed a child-resistant, senior-friendly blister package system that sandwiches blisters between two layers of PVC. The all-plastic layup supports the package’s child-resistance functioning, while providing durability in patient use.

Permalith Plastics manufactures tablet blister and dosage cards and plastic media products, such as plastic cards. The PermaSafe Compliance Package is the company’s first blister pack compliance design, says Bill Desmond, sales and marketing vice president, Permalith Plastics.

“Consumers need as much help as possible in taking their medications. The PermaSafe package is like a personal assistant, allowing the patient to keep track of medication use and avoid dosing mistakes with a simple and intuitive unit-dose format,” says Desmond.

“Our multicolor UV printing on the plastic creates high-quality graphics and A-class bar codes. Billboard space, color, graphics, and printing are clear and vibrant,” he adds.

For pill dispensing, the patient slides the pill from its home position and holds it over an exit position for pushing it through the perforated plastic backing. Desmond says that testing of samples according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission protocol by Perritt Labs (Hightstown, NJ) showed that F=1 performance is attainable. The package demonstrated 100% child resistance, as children couldn’t perform the dispensing steps.

Tooling can be specified for adjusting the poundage force required to slide and dispense the tablet, such as by modifying perforations on the foil lid stock, and the back plastic card.

Card thickness can also be adjusted in configuring the push-through force, says Desmond.
