To support medical device manufacturers’ efforts to comply with ISO 11607, “Packaging for Terminally Sterilized Medical Devices,” Alcan Packaging Medical Flexibles (Chicago, IL) offers services to provide manufacturers with supporting evidence that their materials meet the ISO standard. Research engineers at the company’s Neenah Technical and R&D Center in Neenah, WI, can provide services including microbial ranking of porous packaging using the exposure chamber method or ASTM test method F1608 and measuring toxicology attributes using the MEML elusion test. The company also offers technical data sheets that describe components of materials being used, sterilization compatibility, sealing and forming parameters, and shelf-life limitation.

JDSU (Milpitas, CA) a provider of authentication and anticounterfeiting solutions, has made Nosco Inc. (Waukegan, IL) an authorized SecureShift partner for the production of pharmaceutical labels in North America. The SecureShift program allows JDSU’s partners to supply SecureShift technology for pharmaceutical brand protection applications using JDSU’s SecureShift inks. SecureShift uses color-shifting pigments to provide overt and forensic characteristics to deter counterfeiters and to provide positive visual authentication. Only authorized partners have access to JDSU’s SecureShift pigments. SecureShift can be applied to labels, blister packs, bottles, boxes, closures, and molded plastics.

Medisize has achieved FDA registration at its headquarters facility in Hillegom, The Netherlands. The company manufactures custom-made, single-use, sterile medical devices and primary pharmaceutical packaging. It also has facilities in Ireland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

Illinois Tool Works (ITW; Glenview, IL) has acquired Allen Coding Systems (Hertfordshire, UK), a manufacturer of contact coding systems. Allen will report to ITW’s Norwood Marking Systems (Downers Grove, IL). Norwood, a designer and manufacturer of thermal-transfer and hot-stamp printing equipment, will join with Allen to expand both companies’ operations and coding and marking applications. Allen customers will have streamlined access to Norwood’s ribbons and type. Allen’s North American customers will also be able to receive technical service and support from Norwood.
