Company Focuses on Packaging, Printing for New Condom

Global Protection Corp. recently utilized a new printing method for the packaging of its ONE brand of condoms.

Condom manufacturer Global Protection Corp. (Boston) has introduced a new product line that focuses squarely on the package printing in order to reach consumers.

Utilizing updated graphics and the rotogravure printing process, with S04-10-133F aluminum foil at thicknesses of 86 to 90 microns, the company was able to launch its ONE brand of condoms with new full-color elements printed on the wrapper.

Packaged in a newly-designed sleek and circular exterior container, the ONE condom wrappers feature constantly-refreshed visual images on the inside wrappers.

Each wrapper contains a catch phrase, such as an image of the Eiffel Tower with the line, "One culture." According to Global Protection president Davin Wedel, the company had previously used a traditional manufacturing process to produce long foil ribbons that did not allow it to predict where perforations might occur. All text and graphics had to be continuously repeated, with perforations frequently falling into the middle of an image on the wrapper. That process is common among condom manufacturers.

The new printing method fixed that problem, he says, in addition to allowing the company to present condom packaging in a new way. "The product breaks the industry norm of square wrappers and rectangular cardboard boxes," says Wedel. "These condoms are in round wrappers and are retailed in circular clear-polycarbonate cases. Using clean lines and pure forms, the design communicates quality, modernity, and technological advancement." Wedel adds that the packaging's art was designed under his direction, along with a graphic designer.

Wedel notes that the newly-designed condom line had its share of manufacturing challenges. "It was challenging to make sure that the finished package would fit into the allotted space in drug stores," he says. "It was also a challenge to make the package capable of hanging on a retail peg hook without compromising the integrity of the circular package."

Wedel says the condoms, featuring their updated packaging, will be on retailer shelves beginning in June.
