Avail Plans Production Facility in China

Avail Medical Products Inc. (Fort Worth, TX) has embarked on plans for an ambitious new production facility in Asia. The company, which provides outsource services for single-use medical devices, has begun building a new 30,000-sq-ft manufacturing facility in the city of Shenzen, China, scheduled for a late-2005 opening.

Avail China, which will be located about 90 minutes by truck from Hong Kong, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Avail and will be staffed with Avail employees. The facility, which will initially employ 200—300 people, is expected to grow to include more than 1000 employees within the next few years, according to the company.

Avail representatives stated that the location was chosen due to its ability to give customers easy access to markets around the world. It is also part of a fast-expanding industrial region with a growing infrastructure that supports medical manufacturing.

Workers at the facility will deliver finished single-use medical device products for OEMs worldwide. “The global medical device business is expected to grow at a compound average growth rate of 7% through the end of this decade, with the finished goods outsource segment growing at more than twice that rate,” said J. Randall Keene, president and CEO of Avail. “This kind of growth requires the medical device outsourcer to provide its customers with multiple alternatives in terms of capabilities, locations, continuous process improvement programs, and low-cost opportunities. Avail’s presence in China is just one more building block in the ongoing effort to support our customers’ requirements.”

Avail is an outsource developer and manufacturer of sterile, single-use medical devices. The company also provides full product life cycle management, from design to distribution.
