Several pharmaceutical and medical packaging companies were among 2004’s winners of the annual Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) Ameristar Awards, given for excellence in package design.
The winners in the pharmaceutical packaging category are as follows:
• Astelin Ready-Spray, MedPointe Pharmaceuticals (Somerset, NJ).
• VPX—Redline, CCL Container. This liquid supplement/beverage utilizes cold fill technology in combination with a resealable aluminum bottle. It uses CCL’s new continuous-thread, CT-38 plastic outsert bottle finish.
• Thermal Control Panel, TCP Reliable Inc. This product is part of the company’s new approach to maintaining stable product temperatures during transit, which provides savings in weight, a smaller size, and additional protection.
• NapraPAC Dosepak, TAP Pharmaceuticals. This compliance package features seven days of therapy combining the arthritis drug Naprosyn and the acid suppressor Prevacid. It was co-designed by TAP, Meadwestvaco Healthcare Packaging, and Anderson Packaging Inc.
• Sample Package System, Novartis. This child-resistant/senior-friendly physicians’ sample packaging system utilizes a bottle/closure system covered by a reverse printed shrink sleeve that provides tamper evidence.
Winners in the medical packaging category are:
• Resting Heart System, Medtronic. This sterilizable, two-piece package protects a reduced prime cardiopulmonary bypass system. The system is used in open, arrested heart surgeries and takes over for the body to pump and oxygenate the patient’s blood to support life. Medtronic’s package is used to manufacture, transport, and dispense the product.
• Ethicon Inc. TVT-Obturator Package, Prent Corp. This package allows a surgeon to access delicate and precise instruments without danger of contamination, deformation, or injury. This design utilizes the rigid and resilient characteristics of plastic to provide unique, value-added, sterile-barrier packaging to protect the product.
• Precision Thermoformed Tray, Boston Scientific. This packaging tray demonstrates the detail required to solve various difficult product requirements in a small, cost-effective space.
• I-Glide, Ethicon Endo-Surgery. This packaging was redesigned for the Independence Technology Inc. I-Glide wheelchair. It provides efficiency and improvement of material costs, labor reductions, storage space, transportation savings, and environmental waste reductions. The redesign also allows the end-user easier access to the contents of the package.
