Product Update

Dependable Desiccants

Desiccants protect products during shipping and storage.

DESI Program

A Desiccant Efficiency System Integration (DESI) program helps manufacturers optimize their packaging lines by using the most efficient desiccant product, configuration, and automation equipment to fit their needs. The company’s solutions range from desiccant canisters with insertion capabilities of 500 per minute to desiccant packets, inserts, oxygen absorbers, and polymer solutions. Süd-Chemie Performance Packaging, Albuquerque; 505/244-7068; www.s-cpp.com.

MiniPax

Compact and durable nondusting sorbent packets take up little space in packaging yet have high moisture adsorbing capacity. They are offered with a variety of sorbent blends and sizes to meet specific packaging needs. MiniPax are constructed with medical-grade uncoated Tyvek. They have high tear strength in all directions and are virtually puncture-proof. A high water-vapor transmission rate makes the material suitable for sorbent packets. Desiccant Basket

A desiccant basket allows pharmacists to quickly and easily retrieve a desiccant from drug packaging requiring reconstitution. The basket rests in the top of the bottle keeping the desiccant separated from the pharmaceutical compound. It many also be used to keep a desiccant separated from other contents, such as pills, capsules, and tablets. The desiccant basket can serve as a replacement for rayon or cotton. Unlike other options, this component fits into standard stock containers and resides completely within the bottle, allowing the use of virtually any lining material, including heat seal, as well as screw-top, tamper-evident, and child-resistant closures. The basket is suited for use with a wide range of jars and bottles in HDPE and other materials. Samples are available for containers with 38–53 mm neck finishes. O. Dri-Mac

A desiccant canister is used for high-speed automatic insertion in the healthcare, nutrition, and diagnostic market sectors. The Dri-Mac canister has an energy-directing protrusion to facilitate the sonic welding of the end cap and Tyvek membrane such that on cooling, the body, end cap, and Tyvek become one integral body. This ensures product integrity, and the quality control vision system offers 100% quality inspection. The assembly operation ensures the canister passes through four vision systems confirming that the components are assembled correctly and consistently, and at the same time also checking the laser printing. If the canister does not meet specification it is rejected. The canister range of sizes and adsorbent fills easily fit most sizes of bottles. The distinctive nature of the canisters ensures that tablets and capsules in the container are easily differentiated from the Dri-Mac canister. Dritabs

Chemically inert, nontoxic desiccant tablets are suitable for high-volume packing applications where a small, low-cost desiccant is required. They are based on molecular-sieve desiccant, which reduces relative humidity down to zero. Dritabs are particularly effective where a very low residual relative humidity is required, and they are capable of keeping a system totally dry over a long period of time. Benefits include maximum drying capacity for minimum space, manufacturing to the shape of your particular application, ease of handling, and testing of blister pack moisture-vapor transmission rate.
