This year, three entries received Diamond Awards for most innovative packaging. Among these winners was The Paper Products Ltd. (PPL; Maharastra, India) for its holographic foil used in GlaxoSmithKline’s Panadol blister packs to prevent counterfeiting. The heat-sealable lidding material developed for the thermoformed blister packs is made of a specialty sealing lacquer on one side of the aluminum foil, explains Skand Bikram Singh, business manager, PPL. This is surface-printed, and a security hologram seal is applied in register to the print design and branding. “The unique feature of this holographic foil for pharma blister packs includes the holographic seal as an integral part of the lidding material, unlike the classical add-on sticker pasted on top,” says Singh. “This provides an extra tamperproof feature to the product as a high-end anticounterfeiting solution.”

| Cebal Americas won a Silver Award for GlaxoSmithKline’s Aquafresh Floss ‘N’ Cap laminate toothpaste tube. |
A Silver Award was presented to Alcan Pechiney Plastic Packaging (Chicago) for its soluble film drug-delivery pouch. Tapemark Corp. wanted a peelable pouch for quick-dissolve soluble films with high-barrier properties that would also be transparent to display the product inside. The two-structure combination allows for one side to be clear and the other to use a cost-effective foil lamination. The foil lamination has essentially zero transmission of both gas and moisture. The package provides a flexible thin-film alternative for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications.

Cebal Americas (Norwalk, CT) also won a Silver Award for GlaxoSmith-Kline’s Aquafresh Floss ‘N’ Cap laminate toothpaste tube. The package combines a toothpaste tube, flip-top cap, and floss dispenser in one package. According to the judges, the entry is technically innovative because of the engineering involved in fitting the floss container to the cap of the tube.
PenJet Corp. (Santa Monica, CA) won a Silver Award for PenJet, a nitrogen gas–powered, prefilled, single-dose disposable, needleless safety syringe. The one-piece main injector housing is produced in medical-grade polycarbonate.
