Blow-Fill-Seal

An Alternative Unit-Dose Format
Foam-Tip vials offer an alternative to blow-fill-seal unit-dose vials.

Unicep Packaging Inc. (Sandpoint, ID), a contract packager, offers an alternative to blow-fill-seal for production of unit-dose vials. This fall, the company is launching Foam-Tip plastic vials, which integrate a single-use foam applicator with a Twist-Tip vial. Polypropylene is the standard resin, although other resins are available.

In January 2004, Unicep completed and occupied a $5 million, 34,000-sq-ft expansion, more than doubling its square footage. The company devoted a considerable portion of this space to mixing and formulating equipment. “We expanded both the size and the quality of mixers we have in-house,” says Steve Dilts, director of sales and marketing. The company invested in a series of five pharmaceutical-grade Ross-Olsa mixers ranging from a 5-L R&D mixer to a 1,000-L production mixer.

“This line of mixers eases the process of scale-up from the R&D batch to production-scale batches,” Dilts says.

Unicep constructed two Class 10,000–capable cleanrooms in the expansion and is in the process of validating them. Unicep’s process and equipment are not aseptic, so the company sends finished product to a contract sterilizer if required. Some of the products Unicep packages that require terminal sterilization are solutions used for operative dentistry, in vitro diagnostics, and veterinary products.
