According to a study from The Freedonia Group Inc. (Cleveland), demand for pharmaceutical packaging products in the United States will increase 4.7% annually to $6.8 billion in 2008. The study, titled “Pharmaceutical Packaging,” predicts that blister packaging will generate above-average growth due to FDA’s unit-dose regulations for institutional drugs. Pouches and strip packs will continue to fare well in the marketplace as a lower-cost alternative to blister packaging. Prefillable inhalers will generate the strongest demand gains among all pharmaceutical packaging products, says the study. This growth is attributed to new asthma and allergy medicines with specialized delivery requirements reaching the market. Demand for secondary pharmaceutical containers will expand at a below-average pace.
A separate study, “High Visibility Packaging: Clamshells, Blisters, and Others,” indicates that U.S. demand for this type of packaging is expected to grow 5.1% annually to $7.2 billion in 2008. The best opportunities are anticipated for clamshells and carded blister packs. Windowed packaging demand will expand at a below-average pace due to loss of share to blister packs and clamshells in nonfood uses.
