Printing, Closures Distinguish Award-Winning Tubes![]() |
| Tandem Oral Care's Tandem Floss and Fluoride, distinguished as the Most Innovative Tube of the Year, incorporates a built-in reminder to floss. |
Two pharmaceutical-related tubes have been recognized in The Tube Council's (Montclair, NJ) annual Tube of the Year Awards. Montebello Packaging's (Oak Park, IL) collapsible metal tube for Polysporin Antibiotic Ointment, manufactured by Draxis Pharma for licensee Pfizer, was recognized as the Pharmaceutical Tube of the Year. CCL Container's (Morton, PA) laminated tube for Tandem Floss and Fluoride, marketed by Tandem Oral Care Inc. and SDI Labs, was acclaimed as the Most Innovative Tube of the Year.
Judges assembled at the council's annual meeting in Santa Fe, NM, in late April. They included Jani Klatt, national accounts manager for Formulab (Albuquerque), a manufacturer and packager of private-label products; Beverly Chavez, president of Stixon Labels (Albuquerque), a label printer; Ralf Moller, CEO of AromaLand (Santa Fe), a provider of aromatherapy spa products; and Daphne Allen, editor of Pharmaceutical & Medical Packaging News magazine and group editor of Cosmetic/Personal Care Packaging magazine.
In this year's program, judges evaluated tubes according to their design and decoration, finish and construction, application, and user-friendliness. Such evaluations included consideration of graphics, closure design, shape, texture, and ease of use. Awards of interest to healthcare professionals included:
- Plastic Tube of the Year.
- Metal Tube of the Year.
- Laminate Tube of the Year.
- Ted Klein Tube of the Year.
- Most Innovative Tube of the Year.
- Pharmaceutical Tube of the Year.
Montebello Packaging's tube for Polysporin Antibiotic Ointment, the Pharmaceutical Tube of the Year, is a vibrantly colored tube printed using offset technology in yellows and greens to convey the addition of soothing ingredients to the formulation. The judges were particularly impressed with the reverse-taper, puncture-tip cap, made by Montebello. It flared out, almost in the shape of a cone, fitting comfortably between thumb and forefinger for an easy grip.
The Most Innovative Tube of the Year, CCL Container's tube for Tandem Floss and Fluoride, was unlike any other contestant. With a floss dispenser built into the cap, the tube struck the judges as ideal for travel and for consumers who need reminders to floss. The playful graphics were also eye- catching: a strip of floss winds its way through the letters in the brand name Tandem.
Other winners of interest to healthcare product professionals include Cebal Americas's (Norwalk, CT) ex-truded plastic tubes for BeautiControl Cosmetics's Body Exotics, which was recognized as the Personal Care Tube of the Year; Walgreen's Land Before Time Bubble Gum Toothpaste by CCL Container, chosen as the Dentifrice Tube of the Year; Handsfree Sunscreen, made by Norden AndbroInc. (Pitman, NJ) for Handsfree Marketing and chosen as the International Tube of the Year; GlaxoSmith-Kline's Aquafresh, selected as the Laminate Tube of the Year, made by Cebal Americas; and Belvedere's Down Under Natural's Mates, Tazzleberry, the Plastic Tube of the Year, by Amcor Plastube North America (Granby, QC, Canada). The Ted Klein Tube of the Year award was given to Groupe Lise Watier's Eau de Mer, manufactured by Amcor Plastube North America.
