PRODUCT UPDATE

Protect Products with Inventive Closures

Closures protect the products while allowing various means of access for patient use.

A pharmaceutical closure is designed to be used on an array of prescription medications and nutritional supplements, specifically tablets and dry products. The Low Profile Squeeze-Lok closure fits within standard neck finishes with minor modifications to existing bottle tooling. The Low Profile Squeeze-Lok is a nontorque-dependent, one-piece, continuous-thread closure with a squeeze-and-turn mechanism featuring a locked position that can be seen, heard, and felt. The closure's tabs provide visual and audible verification that the cap is latched. A snap occurs as the cap is being turned, and the consumer can feel the tabs drop into place as the cap is being closed. Rexam Closures, Evansville, IN.

A variety of caps and closures are available with hinges, applicators, dosing devices, child-resistant and tamper-evident features, and snap-shut designs. A child-resistant cap uses the push-and-turn technique. The double tamper-evident closure functions through the removal of the center disk of the over-cap and the tearing of the tamper-evident ring on the rim of the lower cap. A version using only a single tamper-evident feature is available. The closure can be fitted with a desiccant capsule as well as a bellows spacer. Applicators available include brush, sipor, and foam pad. A one-piece flip-top closure called the Hingeguard features tamper evidence and is equipped with an integrated desiccant capsule for use with wide-mouth containers. The company's tamper-evident screw cap RD 38 is a low-cost screw cap with a reliable thread seal. The Snap-Cap-Tube is a tablet container with an easy-to-open flip top. Sanner of America, Cherry Hill, NJ.

Rubber-free closures and components are available from a company that specializes in pharmaceutical packaging. The company's Formula 4588/40 elastomer works well for serum stoppers, IV closures, plungers, and liners for seals. Formulation 4588/40, a variation of the company's 1888, substitutes synthetic polyisoprene for dry-processed natural rubber while maintaining the functional, chemical, and biological characteristics of 1888. Other natural rubber-free components are also available from the company. West Pharmaceutical Services, Lionville, PA.
