The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce represents a five-county region of Texas with a population more than 1.4 million people. The region thrives on a balance of technology, business services, and education. With its highly trained workforce, well-recognized quality of life, moderate cost environment, and vast experience in manufacturing and research and development (R&D), Austin serves the needs of medical device and manufacturing industries in a unique way.
Through collaborative educational efforts, the Austin area provides a competitive advantage in developing skilled employees and continuing R&D for the medical community. Within a 100-mile radius of Austin there are 38 colleges and universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's largest universities.
Annual research expenditures at the University of Texas at Austin exceed $380 million. The university ranks in the top 10 for the number of students receiving science and engineering doctoral degrees. Its programs include biomedical, bioengineering, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and pharmaceutical research.
The Austin Technology Incubator, the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Biology, and the Institute for Innovation, Creativity and Capital foster growth for medical-related industries. Using money from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, the Central Texas Regional Center of Innovation and Commercialization serves as a catalyst for emerging technology research, development, commercialization, and start-up incubation.
Through regional community partners, a variety of incentives may be available for qualified companies. Such incentives include job training, infrastructure assistance, tax abatement, and enterprise zone benefits.
