The following indicators were highlighted in ipIQ's recent analysis of medical device patents by state and core-based statistical area.

  • Technology Strength: Provides an overall assessment of intellectual     property and innovation by considering a portfolio's quality and quantity aspects.
  • Current Impact Index (CII): Showcases the broader significance of a company's patent     portfolio by examining how influential its patents are across the industry and in specific     product categories. It measures a portfolio's importance as a foundation for other patents and     technologies.
  • Science Linkage: Reflects the core science referenced in a company's U.S. patents, as     measured by the average number of science literature references listed in the patents. A high     figure indicates the company is closer to cutting-edge research than its competitors.
  • Technology Cycle Time: Indicates a firm's speed in turning proprietary research and     innovation into intellectual property.
  • Patent Count: Equals the number of U.S. patents awarded, excluding design and other     special-case inventions.
