Industry association AdvaMed (Washington, DC) has appointed Martyn W. C. Howgill to serve as executive director of its newly created Institute for Medical Technology Innovation.
Most recently, Howgill served as vice president for international business development and chief marketing officer at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston). During his eight-year tenure there, Howgill developed and managed domestic and international marketing campaigns to build the center's image as a premier cancer care and research facility.
The Institute for Medical Technology Innovation will operate as an independent research and education foundation. According to AdvaMed, the institute aims to examine the value of advances in medical technology and the contributions made to the U.S. healthcare system and economy through innovation. During the first phase of its national capital fund-raising campaign, AdvaMed raised nearly $12.5 million to support the institute, exceeding the association's initial goal of $5 million.
Commenting on Howgill's appointment, AdvaMed president Pamela G. Bailey said, "For the institute to accomplish its mission of creating a positive climate for medical technology innovation worldwide, it needs a leader who not only understands the dynamics of healthcare, but also knows how to foster organizational growth.
"Martyn brings a solid mix of healthcare, business development, marketing, and foundation management experience that will be essential to ensuring the institute's long-term success," Bailey added.
Howgill has also held senior-level positions at Methodist Hospital of Indiana (Indianapolis), HCA Wesley Medical Center (Wichita, KS), St. Francis Regional Medical Center (Wichita, KS), and Methodist Medical Center (St. Joseph, MO).
In June, AdvaMed also announced that it has formed two new product-sector working groups for the areas of health information technology and advanced wound management. The groups will address barriers to patient access and other policy issues.
"AdvaMed's board of directors recognizes the needs of its member companies in these two growing sectors of the healthcare industry," said Bailey. "These sectors will work to address the significant challenges to patient and provider adoption of these emerging technologies."
