Commissioner McClellan at a Glance

FDA's newest commissioner may have a clean slate with regard to FDA, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have an extensive track record. Following are some career highlights—so far.

1985:         BA (English and biology) summa cum laude, University of Texas,
                   Austin.
1991:         MA, MPA (regulatory policy), Harvard University.
1991–1995: Research associate, Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School.
1992:         MD cum laude, Harvard–Massachusetts Institute of Technology Division of Health                    Sciences and Technology.
1993:         PhD (economics), Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
1993–1995: Resident in internal medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital.
1995–1999: Assistant professor of economics and medicine, Stanford University.
1995–2001: Attending physician in internal medicine, Stanford Health Services.
1996:         Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine.
1998–1999: Deputy assistant secretary for economic policy, U.S. Department of the
                   Treasury.
1998–2001: Director, Program on Health Outcomes Research, Stanford Center for Health
                   Policy.
2000:         National Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University.
2000–2001: Associate professor of economics and medicine, Stanford University.
2001–2002: Member, president's Council of Economic Advisers.

In addition, McClellan is a member of the national cancer policy board of the National Academy of Sciences, associate editor of the Journal of Health Economics, and coprincipal investigator of the health and retirement study, a longitudinal study of the health and economic well-being of older Americans. He has also served as a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (Washington, DC).
