Covidien has received FDA clearance for a surgical device that enables three laparoscopic instruments to be fitted through a single port. According to the president of the company’s surgical devices division, the SILS Multiple Instrument Access Port is the first device specifically indicated for multiple instrument access to the abdomen via one incision. Covidien plans on commercializing the device in the United States and Europe this year.Â
