Pioneer’s Design Endured

 

Perfection regained: The perfect fit of the Sandia ceramic scaffolding in the model jaw also recreates the upper line of the original jawbone. Sir John Charnley designed the first artificial hip joint. His metal-based design was the industry standard for almost 30 years, until orthopedics manufacturers started using ceramics.

Charnley was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame this year.
