Orthopaedic Instrument Market Surges

Laser machining is among the technologies that will be demonstrated on the show floor at EMO 2007.

European markets for orthopaedic surgical instruments are expected to almost double in revenue over the next seven years, according to a report from international consultancy Frost & Sullivan. The market is currently in a growth phase, and this trend is expected to continue for the next five years, at least.

An ageing population, the rising incidence of diseases such as arthritis, and unhealthy lifestyles that lead to obesity are driving this growth. Better awareness of orthopaedic replacements and surgical procedures among the patient population is also contributing to an increase in the number of orthopaedic surgeries and, thus, an expansion of the market.

The report, titled European Markets for Orthopaedic Surgical Instruments, also notes that contract manufacturers are playing a more important role than in the past, as implant manufacturers increasingly outsource production to regional and local manufacturers. Approximately 65% of the market is held by contract manufacturers that deal directly with OEMs, says the report.

The report can be purchased through Dublin-based Research and Markets (www.researchandmarkets.com).
