Driven to Succeed

Auto parts manufacturers in mid-Michigan's Saginaw Valley, including parts maker, Delphi Corp., have suffered major profit losses in recent years. Instead of waiting for the market to bounce back, Delphi decided to apply its technical background to a new area: medical devices.

In 2004, Delphi Medical Systems was founded with the help of former Baxter executive Christophe Sevrain. In less than a year's time, the company had more than $500 million in contracts with medical OEMs. The firm is now known for its dialysis, infusion, respiratory, and monitoring products.

Sevrain is now working with Saginaw Future Inc. (SFI) to revitalize the area. His main task is to implement SFI's initiative on medical devices and technology. As part of its strategy, the group will work with global companies based in Saginaw Valley to spin out new medical businesses. The group will also offer support to firms that want to add or expand into medical manufacturing. And it will partner with a local university to create educational programs and build up expertise in medical device development.

It's an exciting time for Saginaw Valley. With the help of Sevrain, SFI, and the medical industry already in place, the region will have a smooth ride toward becoming a successful, profitable med tech corridor.
