Medical Devices, Yankee-Style
Even with a total
population of less than 2 million, New Hampshire has made its
presence known. It was the first state to sign the Declaration of
Independence and is the first state to hold presidential primary
elections. Nashua resident John Gage is considered to be the first
machinists' tool manufacturer. And-my personal favorite-the first
female magazine editor in the nation, Sarah J. Hale , was from
Newport.
The state also has a strong presence when it comes to medical
manufacturing. Extrusion firms are scattered throughout the southern
region. Suppliers of molding,
machining, and sterilization services and makers of testing and
packaging equipment can all be found in New Hampshire.
Surprised? I know I was. As it turns out, the New England region
is rich with medical device OEMs, suppliers, and vendors. The area
ranks in second place for total number of residents working in
medical device manufacturing. (California is first.) And those
Yankee workers are very proud to produce components and materials
that end up in everything from catheters to ultrasound
equipment.
If you'd like to read more about all the medical manufacturing
that's going on in New England, and what companies have to say about
life, liberty, and the pursuit of a good plastics vendor, take a
look at our regional focus on New England in the September issue of
MPMN. And if you get a little hungry while you're reading, I
recommend a nice Maine lobster, or maybe a slice of Boston cream
pie.
