Solutions and Resolutions

The new year is fast approaching, and with it the usual resolutions to improve ourselves in some way. Whether it's losing weight, writing a novel, or starting a business, resolutions can seem daunting and, in some cases, nearly impossible to keep. Some folks aren't so easily discouraged, however.

Take, for example, Bill Gore. He resolved to create a company where engineers like himself could work side-by-side with marketers, salespeople, and designers to develop innovative products. Job titles would be unnecessary and people would work on project teams. He called this nontraditional, nonhierarchical work environment "the Lattice."

On January 1, 1958, W.L. Gore and Associates opened for business and set out to explore possible uses for fluorocarbon polymers, especially PTFE. Within 12 years, company operations had gone global and an expanded PTFE product, now known to the world as Gore-Tex, had been introduced.

In 1975, Gore entered the medical device manufacturing arena with its first sale of its Gore-Tex vascular grafts to a Virginia surgeon. More than 10 million clinical implants later, the company has supplied operating rooms with products ranging from cardiovascular patches to nonabsorbable sutures.

Recently named the most innovative company in America by Fast Company magazine and repeatedly selected by Fortune magazine as one of the best companies to work for in the United States, W.L. Gore continues to nurture the creativity of its associates. The way that marketing associate Thom O'Hara puts it, "There are lots of opportunities here. Our lifeblood is innovation - ideas come from all over the company."

As the company's Medical Products Division celebrates its 30th birthday in 2005, please join us in wishing them many more years of innovative success. Bill Gore would resolve to do nothing less.
