THERMOCOUPLES
Rules of Good Thermocouple Practice
Whatever the medical device application for which a thermocouple is used, optimum accuracy and economy are likely to be hallmarks of its performance only if the following recommendations and advisories are heeded:
Select the type that best matches operational requirements.
Provide adequate protection against environmental challenges.
Use the largest practical size.
Install the device in a location that ensures truly representative measurements.
Provide for sufficient immersion depth.
Avoid changing the immersion depth.
Recognize and adapt to the effects of cyclic heating on
measurement accuracy.
Establish a preventive maintenance program.
Use wiring components that match the device calibration.
Determine whether the chief goal is accuracy or repeatability
of measurement.
Use limit sensors to ensure safe system operation.
Avoid electrical noise.
