THERMOCOUPLES

Rules of Good Thermocouple Practice

Whatever the medical device application for which a thermocouple is used, optimum accuracy and economy are likely to be hallmarks of its performance only if the following recommendations and advisories are heeded:

  • Select the type that best matches operational requirements.
  • Provide adequate protection against environmental challenges.
  • Use the largest practical size.
  • Install the device in a location that ensures truly representative measurements.
  • Provide for sufficient immersion depth.
  • Avoid changing the immersion depth.
  • Recognize and adapt to the effects of cyclic heating on measurement accuracy.
  • Establish a preventive maintenance program.
  • Use wiring components that match the device calibration.
  • Determine whether the chief goal is accuracy or repeatability of measurement.
  • Use limit sensors to ensure safe system operation.
  • Avoid electrical noise.
