Q If I wasn’t talking to you right now, what would you be doing?
A I would be creating a mock up or planning a product or packaging change.
Q How did you get into the medical device industry?
A I left a teaching job to join Baxter as a Training Manager and over many years I have had experience in a number of areas, these include warehousing and distribution, stores management, purchasing, product development and now business development.
Q What is the best thing about your work?
A I am very lucky because I am able to work on all my own ideas. This makes life more interesting and enjoyable while at the same time it guarantees my commitment to delivering a successful outcome. Packaging is a large cost area for Baxter and therefore it receives a lot of focus. We are constantly challenging the use of new material and enhanced processes to affect cost savings and bring about product improvements.
Q What do you think is the most important medical device invention ever?
A The inhaler. This device has had so many successful applications across a broad range of medical conditions that daily bring about a big improvement to the quality of life of millions of people.
Q What should people give attention to?
A The work–life balance. It is most important to do a good job while at the same time looking after the home scene.
Q What is the most exciting development on the horizon?
A As I get older I am increasingly impressed with the developments in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. I have a vested interest because I may need these products some day soon!
Q What do you want from your suppliers?
A To continue to work with them in partnership so that we are creating the best products at the best prices and are at the forefront in delivering change.
