EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD
Karl Hemmerich is plant manager of the Sandy, UT, gamma irradiation facility, and is a customer technical support and market education specialist for STERIS Isomedix Services. Prior to joining STERIS, Mr. Hemmerich was president of Ageless Processing Technologies, an engineering consulting network specializing in sterilization selection and program development with an emphasis on: radiation material selection and process validation; product validation; product design; and holistic process development. Before founding APT, he spent seven years with Ivac Corp. in R&D and product support, six years with Cutter Laboratories in R&D and product development, and eight years with Becton Dickinson (a pioneer in radiation sterilization of medical products) in all aspects of product development. Mr. Hemmerich was selected as one of MD&DIís 100 Notable People in the medical device industry in 2008. He holds numerous patents and is a member of many professional organizations including: AAMI/ISO, ASME, ASQC, and SPE (where he is a hotline attendant). He has been a member of MD&DIís Editorial Advisory Board since 2003. He was a member of the ISO 11137 Radiation Materials Working Group, developing standards (Technical Information Report # 17) in radiation materials selection, qualification/validation test techniques (e.g., accelerated aging), and quality processing methods. He has written and presented papers on radiation sterilization and materials selection for many corporations, universities, and professional organizations, including MD&DI, SPE, FDA, HIMA, and ASQC. He holds a bachelorís in engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, a masters in biomedical engineering from New York University, and an MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University. In addition, he has undertaken specialty study in numerous areas including polymeric materials, molding and extrusion, ultrasonic assembly, statistical process control, multivariant analysis, advanced computer analysis, and food technology.
