Optos Awarded for Innovation

Scotland-based Optos plc (Dunfermline, UK) was honored for its breakthrough device that images the retina to find both retinal and systemic diseases.

Optos received the 2007 Scotland plc Award for Innovation for its laser ophthalmoscope that helps clinicians detect and diagnose retinal diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. The technology, which generates retinal imaging, can also find evidence indicative of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain forms of cancer. In a single capture, the device creates a high-resolution image up to 200°, or about 82%, of the retina. Conventional exam techniques image only about 5% of the retina.
