Selecting an Abrasives Supplier

Return to Article:
When choosing a supplier of abrasives for grinding medical implants, prosthesis manufacturers will want to ask each candidate about the technical and engineering support it offers. Questions should include the following:
  • Does the supplier have skilled application engineers with expertise in processing orthopedic implants—engineers who are also actively engaged in process-improvement projects within the medical device industry?
  • Does the supplier’s expertise include CNC grinding using conventional and superabrasive wheels, polishing applications, and other related abrasive processes?
  • Does the supplier take a systems approach to grinding? That is, when proposing a grinding solution, does the supplier’s engineering team consider the machine tool, work material, abrasive product, and operational factors? And, as a result, does this provide an integrated solution that optimizes both technical and economic output?
  • Does the supplier have research facilities with specialists and a comprehensive inventory of machine types, including robotic and manual grinding and polishing cells, that can provide developmental and technical services based on a customer’s requirements?

Of course, the answer to each of these questions should be “yes.”
