MANAGEMENT

Excuses for not Delegating

Return to Article:
In a move to a management position, engineers often hold on to the tasks they enjoy or feel most comfortable with. Common reasons for not delegating include the following:1
  • It would take too long to explain.
  • I like to do this work.
  • They don’t like to do this work.
  • I’m the only one who knows how.
  • They’ll screw it up.
  • I can do it better and faster.
  • No one else is available.
  • I don’t want to lose my grasp on the technology.
  • They will outshine me.

Although it is difficult, managers must be able to let go of their previous responsibilities so that they can focus on the tasks of their new position.
