Strong Fundamentals Form MedTech Foundation
Analysts predicted a strong year for medical devices, with exciting new developments
to stimulate funding, growth, and revenues. Earlier this year, Scott R. Davidson,
senior research analyst with Piper Jaffray, predicted that 2004 would see an
above-average amount of mergers and acquisitions in the medtech industry.
We will see offensive M&A, in which companies look to the next leg
of growth, but also to defensive M&A, to protect market leadership and existing
franchises, Davidson said.
By mid-year, the industry had already seen 74 mergers and acquisitions (see
the table on page 58 for a list of the key mergers and acquisitions in 2004).
The tables and charts on these pages provide a look at the financial health
of the device industry. Indicators include a chart comparing industry performance
with Standard & Poors 500, a list of the industrys key mergers
and acquisitions, and the top 40 medical manufacturers worldwide, ranked by
revenue.
