Abbott plus BDIS equals new hematology analyzer

Take some automated hematology experience from Abbott Diagnostics (Santa Clara, CA), add a little immunodiagnostic technology from Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems (BDIS; San Jose), and what do you have? A novel, fully automated immunohematology analyzer.

An automated platelet analyzer is the first product born of the Abbott/BDIS alliance. It combines the BDIS CD61 monoclonal antibody and reagent technology with Abbott's Cell-Dyn 4000 hematology system. The new systems promise to provide "innovative technologies that will improve healthcare while reducing costs," says Deborah Neff, BDIS president.

According to the companies, other applications of the system in the pipeline include analysis of CD4 and CD8 antibodies. Among other applications, a CD4 analyzer could help monitor low T-cell counts in HIV patients.—Gary Woo
