Stanbio Laboratory (Boerne, TX) was awarded a contract to supply the state of Louisiana's Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program with its point-of-care diagnostic system for hemoglobin testing. Stanbio will provide its HemoPoint H2 hemoglobin test system to WIC locations throughout Louisiana. This device is a CLIA-waived, hemoglobin system intended for use in physician offices and other professional healthcare facilities such as hospitals, public health clinics, and blood centers. The HemoPoint H2 system consists of a dedicated photometer that measures hemoglobin in whole blood samples using microcuvette technology.

Abbott Diagnostics (Abbott Park, IL) signed an exclusive agreement with Cincinnati Children's Hospital to develop a urine-based diagnostic assay to detect kidney injury and disease using the protein neutrophil gelantinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). This biomarker has been reported to be valuable in assisting physicians in rapidly and accurately diagnosing kidney failure in a matter of hours compared with current tests that may take up to several days. NGAL is one of several biomarkers that Abbott scientists are working with to develop assays for its analyzers. Abbott is also developing automated assays to help physicians diagnose patients with preeclampsia and small cell lung cancer.
