Millipore Corp. (Billerica, MA) has announced that its Amicon Ultra-15 centrifugal filter device has been granted a CE mark. The system can purify and concentrate up to 15 ml of protein sample in as short as 10–15 minutes. An Ultracel regenerated-cellulose membrane helps minimize adsorption of macromolecules. In late April, Millipore said it had reached a deal to acquire Serologicals Corp. (Norcross, GA), a diversified supplier of consumable biological products (see news story).

Luminex Corp. (Austin, TX) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA) have signed a licensing agreement to develop and commercialize microRNA assays and related products. The terms of the deal cover both life sciences research and clinical diagnostics. “We believe the emerging microRNA field represents a promising new space with significant commercial potential,” says Patrick Balthrop, president and chief executive officer of Luminex Corp. “This further strengthens Luminex’s role in the development of advanced multiplexed products and solutions for the life sciences marketplace.”

Nanogen Inc. (San Diego) has acquired the diagnostics division of Amplimedical S.p.A. (Milan, Italy), a manufacturer of molecular diagnostics reagents and a wholly owned subsidiary of Amplifon S.p.A., for €8.1 million (approximately $10 million) in cash and stock. Nanogen will merge Amplimedical’s business with its existing European operations to form Nanogen Advanced Diagnostics S.r.L. The enlarged company will be the center of Nanogen’s operations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. During the last five years, the company has distributed Nanogen’s NanoChip systems in Italy.
