According to a report by Greystone Associates (Amherst, NH), advances in sensing electronics and signal processing are paving the way for glucose monitors that have the potential to eliminate the need for invasive blood sampling. While currently dominated by meters that require a sample of whole blood to produce a relative glucose reading, the market will look vastly different by the end of the decade.

The next generation of glucose monitors will be based on a trio of energy techniques designed into monitors that will be capable of measuring glucose concentration through intact skin. These technologies (e.g., radio frequency, thermal, and optical) rely on different approaches to solving the daunting challenges posed by weak signals, biochemical interference, and patient-to-patient variability.

Tm Bioscience Corp. (Toronto) has signed an agreement with McMaster University (Hamilton, ON, Canada) to collaborate on the development of an upper-respiratory viral panel using the Tag-It technology from Tm. James Mahony, PhD, director of the McMaster University regional virology and chlamydiology laboratory, is developing a prototype assay with assistance from Tm. Once McMaster validates the prototype, the panel will be further developed and commercially launched by Tm. The prototype is anticipated to be developed by the end of 2005, with a commercial launch of the validated product in 2006. “This agreement demonstrates our model of collaborating with partners that have complementary expertise and resources in order to develop tests targeting novel markers without significantly impacting our resources,” said Greg Hines, president and CEO at Tm Bioscience.”

SomaLogic Inc. (Boulder, CO) has entered a technology development agreement with Quest Diagnostics Inc. (Lyndhurst, NJ). Under the terms of the deal, Quest will develop new diagnostic tests based on SomaLogic’s proprietary aptamer-array platform. In addition, Quest has made a $15 million equity investment in SomaLogic.

SomaLogic is using its proprietary aptamer-array technology to discover new biomarkers and patterns of biomarkers (or disease signatures) for a range of unmet needs in the area of clinical diagnostics.
