Martin D. Madaus, PhD, has left Roche Diagnostics (Indianapolis) to become the new president and chief executive officer of Millipore Corp. (Billerica, MA). Madaus’ appointment will be effective no later than February 1, 2005.
“I am very excited about joining a company with the reputation and potential of Millipore,” said Madaus. “The company’s products and technologies are critical to the future of biotechnology and life science research.”
Madaus will assume the role of Millipore’s president and CEO from Francis J. Lunger, who will remain as chairman of the board during a transition period. Madaus will also join the company’s board of directors.
“Martin has exceptional technical, business, and international experience, and the energy and vision to lead Millipore through its next stage of growth,” said Robert Bishop, the lead director on the company’s board of directors.
Last April, Lunger announced that he had decided to step down as Millipore’s president and CEO. The company’s board of directors initiated a search for a new CEO, which it hoped to complete within six months.
“Given the technical nature of our products and the markets that we serve, I have agreed with the board that now is the time to transition to new leadership,” said Lunger at the time of his announcement. “The board believes that enhanced scientific and technical leadership will best position Millipore to take advantage of the growth opportunities available to us in the increasingly competitive and changing environment in which we compete. I will work with the board in its selection process for my successor.”
Meanwhile, Roche is making efforts to find a replacement for Madaus. While the company has not set any timeframe as to when it will appoint a new president and CEO, Roche officials said that the search committee is considering both internal and external candidates.
“It was Martin’s personal decision to leave the company,” said Lori LeRoy, a public relations consultant at Roche Diagnostics. “In the interim, Heino von Prondzynski, the head of the diagnostics division, will have operational leadership responsibilities for the North American region.”
Madaus was named president and CEO of Roche Diagnostics in 2000. Prior to that, he was vice president of business development for Roche Molecular Diagnostics. He first started working for Roche in 1998, when he was general manager of Boehringer Manneheim Canada (Montreal), through the acquisition of Boehringer Mannheim by Roche. From 1989 to 1998, Madaus worked at Boehringer Mannheim in senior management, sales and marketing, and product management roles both in Germany and the United States.
