For the roundtable presented here, IVD Technology sought out the views of three experts with considerable experience in managing the development and production activities involved in the manufacture of IVD systems. Biographical details about the panelists are provided below.
Gurney Lashley is vice president, supply chain, at Gen-Probe (San Diego). He has had 26 years of experience in the diagnostics and pharmaceutical industries, and has held positions in manufacturing, package engineering, manufacturing engineering, planning, and materials management. Lashley has held positions at Richardson-Merrell (Cincinnati), Becton Dickinson (Franklin Lakes, NJ), and Xoma (Berkeley, CA). In his role as vice president, supply chain, Lashley is responsible for ensuring that Gen-Probe's outsourcing vendors meet the company's quality standards, volume requirements, and pricing targets.
Brian Richards is executive vice president, director, and cofounder of Response Biomedical Corp. (Burnaby, BC, Canada). Richards is responsible for strategic planning, corporate development, regulatory affairs, and intellectual property issues at the company.
Michael J. Whelan is vice president, immunoassays and nucleic acid testing, for Beckman Coulter (Brea, CA). He is responsible for current and future development of the company's Access immunoassay system platforms, and oversees the development of chemiluminesence-based assays available on the system. In addition, he is responsible for the company's new nucleic acid testing business, which will feature molecular diagnostic technologies.
