The U.S. House of Representatives may propose new cuts in laboratory reimbursement. The GOP Medicare Reform Plan, introduced by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R–IL), includes a competitive bidding proposal for laboratory testing. If enacted, the bill would not only require the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS; Baltimore, MD) to implement the system without conducting a demonstration project, but would also eliminate the consumer price index (CPI) update for laboratory services until the competitive bidding system is set in place.
