Abstract:

Lean Manufacturing revolutionized thinking for producing quality products. Industrial leaders imprinted Lean on the hearts and minds of our workforce. Yet, Lean Manufacturing addresses Maintenance only at the equipment. Maintenance management and maintenance processes remain untouched. Some say that Total Productive Maintenance is their application of Lean Manufacturing to Maintenance. Wrong! TPM focused, as originally conceived by the Japanese, on only equipment and its production. We miss the opportunity to apply Lean Manufacturing principles to significantly strengthen Maintenance. For example, smoothing production schedules directly transfers to maintenance scheduling. Disciplined maintenance scheduling delivers 25% measured productivity gains. Why do many still live in ‘hoot and holler’ maintenance methodology? Why do we insist on equipment reliability but tolerate maintenance process failure? About the Speaker:

LEE A. PETERS is a consultant for ProjectLEADER, Inc.  He earned an MSCE in construction/engineering management from Purdue University and an MBA from the Krannert School of Management. His thirty year consulting practice includes research and product development for the Tenth Pan American Games and International Special Olympics. He is an honors graduate of The Command and General Staff College and has served with the Army Corps of Engineers in Thailand and Vietnam.
