Thermo Fisher Scientific Launches Third Generation Handheld NITON® XRF Analyzers
New NITON XL3 800 Series Alloy Analyzers Provide Much Faster Testing Speed and Dramatically Improved Analytical Performance
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of handheld x-ray fluorescence (XRF) alloy analysis instrumentation, is pleased to announce the launch of the Thermo Scientific NITON XL3 Series, the third generation of NITON handheld XRF analyzers. The new NITON XL3 800 Series provides the fastest alloy grade identification and laboratory-quality composition analysis of metal alloys ever performed with a handheld XRF analyzer. Typical time for routine positive grade identification is less than 2 seconds – as much as five times faster than our previous generation of award-winning instruments, increasing sample throughput and user productivity.
“The NITON XL3t features a 50 kilovolt, 2-watt x-ray tube, the highest powered x-ray tube ever offered in a handheld XRF analyzer, as well as advanced electronics that enable a host of new features directly benefiting the customer.” said Jon Shein, Thermo Fisher’s director of global marketing for Thermo Scientific NITON Analyzers. “Increasedbase metal prices, combined with globalized trade in scrap metal, alloy stock and finished products have increased the costs of alloy mix-ups — to suppliers, distributors and industrial consumers. Thermo Fisher Scientific is meeting the demand for faster, more accurate results with the NITON XL3 Series, the most advanced handheld XRF analyzers ever built.” |

The NITON XL3 Series is available in a range of configurations and with an assortment of optional features and accessories to suit a wide variety of analytical needs. Some of the benefits in specific applications include:
- Scrap Recycling: The XL3’s increased testing speed, along with the tilting color display enable the user to increase sorting volume as much as tenfold. Faster testing speed means more measurements per day, increasing the metal sorter’s productivity. With the waterproof, dustproof construction and rugged Lexan® EXL housing, the NITON XL3 Series was built for scrapyard use.
- Positive Material Identification (PMI) programs: Increased productivity and powerful documentation and reporting tools make NITON XL3 Series analyzers essential tools for today’s PMI inspector, with a 75 percent reduction in measurement times for difficult to separate alloys such as SS304/321 and P9/P91 as compared to previous generation XRF analyzers. Accessories and options such as thermal shields for in-service testing, extension handles for hard-to-reach areas, switchable “small-spot” collimation to focus on small areas such as welds, a light element analysis option to quantify Mg, Al, Si and P, and many more features and accessories provide the means to quickly and easily complete the most demanding PMI task.
- Metal Fabrication and Manufacturing : The NITON XL3 Series provides fast verification of incoming materials, and since the XRF analysis is nondestructive, it can be used to perform final QC and to document the material composition of finished product. The NITON XL3 can be used to recover lost material traceability as well, allowing these materials to be used and converted to profit rather than being scrapped.
The NITON XL3 Series incorporates 80 MHz real-time digital signal processing and dual state-of-the-art embedded processors for computation, data storage, communication and other functions. The x-ray tube-excited XL3t 800 features a 50 kV, 2-watt miniaturized x-ray tube with multiple multi-layer primary filters – the most powerful x-ray tube ever placed in a commercially available handheld XRF analyzer – to provide optimized excitation for elements ranging from chlorine through the transuranic elements. The XL3t can also be equipped with small-spot sample analysis, allowing users to switch between full area analysis for large samples and a 3mm small-spot to analyze small sample areas. The NITON XL3 Series offers the only fully-integrated and environmentally-sealed VIP tilting color touch-screen display for easy viewing of sample results in any position and under all lighting conditions. In addition, all NITON analyzers use third-generation lithium-ion batteries providing the longest usage cycle of any portable XRF analyzer.
The NITON XL3 Series comes with the NITON Data Transfer (NDT) Software, a suite of data management utilities that allows users to produce certificates and reports, monitor or operate the instrument remotely from a PC or PDA. The NDT file format preserves and protects the data from each sample analysis, ensuring that this data is not unintentionally or intentionally compromised. The NDT software suite helps users document test results and ensures the quality and integrity of the data produced by the NITON XL3 Series analyzer.
