For radiopacity applications, gold plated tungsten wire and electro-polished tungsten wire are available from Metal Cutting Corporation in both round and ribbon form. While precious metals have excellent density properties, recent industry data indicates that 90% of a device’s cost can be the precious metal components. The periodic table shows that tungsten has the same density as gold and close to platinum. Tungsten is far cheaper, readily available and poses none of the hedging and inventory security risks. In addition, tungsten’s magnetic susceptibility is minimal, another advantage compared with precious metals, especially relevant when magnetic resonance imaging compatibility is important.
