EMDM's Spotlight on Sensors

Contact-free component

A component enables contact-free transmission of analogue signals from a rotating or moving module to one that is stationary. The Inpud-A module comprises a 24-V-dc transmitter with a maximum of four interfaces. These can be operated as voltage outputs or, for long transmission distances, as a current signal of 4.20 mA. A signal amplifier is integrated within the receiver; depending on the application, axial or radial transmission modules are available. MESA Systemtechnik GmbH, Konstanz, Germany.

Multicavity monitoring system

A multicavity monitoring system comprises a selectable number of mould cavity pressure sensors measuring 1 mm diam, a multichannel charge amplifier, and a multichannel monitor. The modular system is designed to provide manufacturers of small moulded parts with a reliable and cost-effective means to monitor quality during the production process. The monitor also features single-conductor technology and plugless cable connections. Kistler Instrumente AG, Winterthur, Switzerland.

Pressure transducers

Low- and medium-pressure transducers are designed with a 316L stainless-steel diaphragm for process control and medical instrumentation use. In these and related applications, it is imperative that the sensing device remain isolated from the media being measured and that it be protected from the environment. The Model 19 ISO-Technology transducer provides normalized output and is available in compensated or uncompensated versions. Operation by means of current or voltage source excitation may be specified. The company's product design service is able to meet client requirements regarding process connections, special materials, labelling, calibration, electrical connections, performance, and packaging. Foxboro/ICT Inc., San Jose, CA, USA.

Ultrasonic sensors

More than 50 different models of ultrasonic sensors are available with detection distances from 80 mm to 5 m. The sensors, which are suitable for use in medical instrumentation, are housed in IP 67–rated bodies. Many of them feature adjusters built into the main switch body for added protection. They are available with analogue and/or digital output; single- or twin-distance sensors are also supplied for applications where the detection of minimum and maximum distances is required. Assemtech Europe Ltd., Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, UK.

Surface-mount pressure sensors

Two families of piezoresistive sensors that can perform gauge and absolute pressure measurements are now available in surface- mount (SMT) packages. Based on the company's SX and SCC series silicon chips, they are designed as an alternative for many OEM pressure-sensing applications where space and cost are critical factors. The SCC SMT is suited for 0–5 to 0–300 psi ranges, whereas the SX SMT is recommended for pressures from 0–1 and 0–150 psi. The sensors feature internal temperature compensation when operated with constant current excitation. Sensortechnics GmbH, Puchheim, Germany.

Transducers

A company's range of OEM piezo transducer products is described in a recently published products and services guide. Detailed information on ultrasonic transducers used in diagnostic equipment is included. Other available transducer types include angle-beam, contact, dual-element, high-temperature, and thickness-gauging models. The company conducts strict quality control, testing, and calibration procedures from the design phase through manufacture. Etalon Inc., Lebanon, IN, USA.

Optoelectronic sensors

OEM optoelectronic sensors are available in slotted optical switches, reflective optical switches, optical couplers, and Hall effect devices. The components are suitable for electromechanical motion- and position- sensing applications in medical analysis and testing equipment. The company provides an array of components from chip level to fully tested hybrid assemblies. Custom capabilities include concept design, evaluation, prototyping, and injection moulding. Clarostat Sensors, Richardson, TX, USA.

Oxygen sensors

Oxygen sensors that come with various connector options can measure oxygen levels of 0–100%. The sensors also have a T90 response time of less than 8 seconds. To stabilize pressure within the sensor, the company has developed an electrode pressure- relieving system. As a result, the MOX oxygen sensors have an 18-month life cycle. The company is certified to ISO 9002. City Technology Ltd., Portsmouth, Hants, UK.

Planar sensor chips

A flow cell relies on sensor chips—planar structures coated with thin layers of electrodes—to perform electrochemical analysis. Unlike the gold or platinum electrodes typically used in electrochemical detection applications that require frequent cleaning, the sensor chips are simply exchanged after use. Easily inserted into the flow cell, sensor chips are operational as soon as the cell is closed. Advantages of the sensors with integrated electrodes compared to standard solid electrodes include faster time to baseline and access to new fields of analyses by virtue of the increased selectivity and high sensitivity of biosensors. Trace Analysensysteme GmbH, Braunschweig, Germany.
