Moulded components

A company that specializes in moulding medical equipment also designs and manufactures tooling and performs assembly work. Surgical instruments, tubing sets, and devices for minimally invasive surgery are routinely produced at the site. The latest CAD software is used in the design phase, and products undergo a thorough visual inspection prior to delivery. The ISO 9001certified facility includes a Class 10,000 cleanroom. Pad printing and ultrasonic sealing services are also available. Gebrüder Renggli AG, Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Composite double-lumen tubing

Double-lumen tubing made of continuous reinforced composite material is suited for use in minimally invasive surgical instruments. The tubing achieves the insulation and stiffness values required for these types of instruments without the addition of a second component. Consequently, it is a cost-effective alternative to combined thermoplastic/stainless-steel assemblies, which may take longer to manufacture. Measuring 1/2 in. OD, the double-lumen tubing is available in grey or black and is autoclavable. It features dielectric strength of 800 V/mil, stiffness of 68 million psi, and flexural modulus at 25°C. Polygon Co., Walkerton, IN, USA.

Cleanroom injection moulding systems

Based on the principle that cleanroom conditions can be achieved on a reduced scale, a company has developed three types of cleanroom systems to suit most applications. The most economical option involves the installation of a laminar-flow system directly above the moulding space of the injection moulder. For more-demanding applications, the moulding space can be covered by a tent with an integrated laminar-flow unit. A permanent hermetic cabin enclosing the mould area is suggested for the most exacting cleanroom requirements. The systems were optimized by analyzing the flow conditions of the injection moulding machines; with these data, engineers were able to specify the boundary conditions for the cleanroom installations. Mannesmann Demag, Schwaig/Nürnberg, Germany.
