The industrial tradition in the West Midlands meshes well with medical technology, according to Tony Davis, CEO of Medilink West Midlands (www.medilinkwm.co.uk). “This is an area, historically, where manufacturing challenges have been solved. Because of our manufacturing heritage, the companies based here are well positioned to develop innovative solutions for the human body.” MedilinkWM has been a key partner in helping many of these companies transition to the medical sector through its business support services and connections with universities and the National Health Service.
The area has an impressive pedigree in medical technology innovation. The first pacemaker and plastic heart valve were created here, according to MedilinkWM, and the first device to detect skin cancer was developed in the region. Going forward, the democratisation of healthcare, manifested by patients taking charge of their medical needs, is driving much of the focus at MedilinkWM, says Davis. Key markets that will be targeted include intelligent health, assistive technologies, infection control and human engineering. The so-called i-House in West Bromwich serves as a showcase for the way in which smart technologies will shape the future. For example, integrated RFID technology monitors visits by caregivers and alerts the pharmacy if a refill on medication is needed.
A recent survey in the United Kingdom found that 87% of people want to remain in their own home after retirement. Given the growing number of people over the age of 65 suffering from a chronic condition, it’s easy to see why the i-House is, well, a smart idea.
