Electrospinning Technology Benefits Implantable Devices
Zeus Inc. (Orangeburg, SC, USA) has developed a new technology platform in the field of electrospinning, a process that produces nano- to microscale-thick polymer fibres. Zeus is able to develop fabrics with complex shapes from solutions, pastes and bioabsorbables. The result is a broad range of fibre and fabric properties that may benefit implantable products.
The electrospun fabric can act as scaffolding to permit integration into the body and promote cellular growth. In the case of bioabsorbable materials, the scaffolding is eventually absorbed, leaving a structure of the body’s own cells intact. To meet application demands, Zeus can introduce additives ranging from therapeutic agents to property modifiers into the solutions, which are then incorporated into the fibres and fabrics.
