Boston Matthews Develops New Pipette-Tube Extruder

The Pipette Tube Line from Boston Matthews can extrude and cut tubing to length at speeds attaining 30 tubes per minute.

Extrusion systems maker Boston Matthews (Diglis, Worcs, UK) has developed an extrusion line for the production of polystyrene (PS) pipette tubes. Designed in cooperation with medical device OEMs, the Pipette Tube Line is described as a versatile system capable of extruding, sizing, drying, and accurately cutting PS tubes without marking or swarf.

The extruder’s direct-drive design ensures clean, brushless operation while providing efficient power transmission. Energy efficiency is further enhanced by the use of ac vector motor technology.

All surfaces are easy to wipe down, and the open-plan construction provides unobstructed access to all areas for cleaning. Surfaces that are in contact with water are made from stainless steel to prevent corrosion and risk of contamination.

The system accommodates a range of pipette tube sizes, which typically have capacities ranging from 1 to 25 ml. All tubes are manufactured and cut to length in-line. The extruder can achieve an output of 30 tubes per minute.

The accompanying tube cutter automatically synchronizes with the line speed, enabling tubes to be cut accurately and consistently to close tolerances without marking, shattering, or swarf. Complete programmable logic control using the company’s Smart system is also available, and the colour touch screen control allows for simple line operation and quick start-up.
