TPE Compounds Introduced for Sensitive Medical Applications

Oil-free thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds have been developed for medical applications where transparency is desirable and the possibility of oil leaching from the material must be minimized. Mediprene OF TPEs are available from VTC TPE Group (Manchester, UK) in hardnesses ranging from 40 to 90 Shore A.

As with all Mediprene grades, these materials withstand gamma, EtO, and steam sterilization and have passed cytotoxicity and biocompatibility tests in accordance with ISO 10993-5 and USP Class VI.

The new compounds exhibit flexibility over a broad temperature range and can be extruded or moulded. They are completely synthetic and latex free, and are suitable replacements for PVC in many medical applications, according to the ISO 13485: 2003–certified firm.
